Theme:“Masquerade”
This year’s Fashion Show/Exhibit/Photography contests are planned by the Executive Board. The tri-chairs for the Fashion Show are Aiko Doike, Staci Kohashi and Erin Voss. Kyrra Lau Eglinton is chairing the Photography Contest. The Fashion Show is a one-day event with the judging in the morning, lunch (catered) and the show to follow. We will serve a light lunch. We would like each club to bring two (2) different homemade desserts that are already cut into serving pieces (enough for 40 people).
The 4-H’ers can begin this project by getting out their sewing machines and start to sew, sew, sew! For those who don’t want to sew, you may enter a ready-made garment. This year instead of writing about your garment, the 20-second commentary will be about the 4-H’er who is entering the fashion show (see registration sheet). Please e-mail your commentaries to roses@hawaii.edu and mail or deliver the hard copies by Wednesday, April 13th.
Photos and exhibits will be due on Wednesday, April 13, 2011. Judging will be held on Sunday, April 24th. All photographs and exhibits will be on display at the Fashion Show with their ribbons. After the Fashion Show, we want everyone to claim their photos and exhibits.
Committees Needed
We are looking for clubs to help chair the following Fashion Show committees: (1) Registration, (2) Securing Judges for Fashion Show, (3) Setting up the lunch, and (4) Scoring and awards. If someone is interested in collecting the Exhibit, help with the judging and setting up the display at the Fashion Show, we need someone to coordinate that.
Fashion Show Entertainment
There are many talented 4-H’ers who may want to show their talent. We are asking individuals or clubs to prepare a short 3-5 minute presentation to entertain the audience after the modeling and before the awards. Please let me know if a 4-H’er or your club would like to perform.

| Portfolio/Record Book |
How many of you are keeping records of all the activities that you are participating in? It is that time of the year in which you need to complete your record books. If you are a junior or senior 4-Her and want to submit only your records that you did for the year, then you should do the record book. That will give you an accounting of what you did in 4-H and other organizations during this 4-H year. 4-Hers submitting record books will be recognized with ribbons at the Achievement Banquet.
If you are 14 years old as of this January and older and want to apply for Congress, then you will need to submit the Portfolio and a resume. The Portfolio should include information for all the years you have been in 4-H including all you did for the present year. For you past experiences select four significant activities or skills learned and feature those. If you are interested in submitting your portfolio please call me to set up a time to meet. I am looking at May 15th to complete the portfolio and resume, although the calendar has the 13th as the deadline. At this time, I don’t have a due date for when the portfolio is due to the state. The County record books are due June 30th instead of the 6th as stated in the calendar. If you need any help in completing the record book or portfolio please call me at 622-4186.

Please save August 6th as the date for the banquet. Chair club Cloverkids are planning for a good time to recognize the accomplishments of the 4-Hers and recognize the leaders for their dedicated service to the program. More information will be forthcoming.

| April - Month of the Military Child |
Every April, military children have reason to celebrate. Why? Because it's the Month of the Military Child.
Wanting to honor military kids for their sacrifices and courage, in 1986 Defense Secretary Casper Weinberger designated April as the Month of the Military Child. Since then, military installations, organizations and communities have created special events to pay tribute to these little military heroes.
There are various activities around the island being planned to help celebrate this special month.

It doesn't take a lot to put a smile on a military child's face. And everyone can do it! Let a fellow classmate, team member, friend, etc know that you appreciate the sacrifices they make for our country by just telling them thank you! Regardless of how you recognize them, make sure they understand that you honor and celebrate them—the military child.

| First 4-H Open House for 2011 |
Thank you to the Warriors 4-H Club 4-H’ers and families for hosting Oahu County’s first 4-H Open House for 2011 on Sunday, March 20, at the Pearl City Urban Garden Center.
Six families came to the garden for the afternoon to meet us and each other, learn about how they can start up their own 4-H clubs, take a mini tour of the gardens, learn how to wash hands properly, learn to make ice cream in a bag, and share some healthy snacks.
With the assistance of Kyrra, our Oahu County 4-H Executive Board President, her mother, and Kim Lockwood, leader of the Keyblade Bearer’s 4-H club, we were able to share what it’s like to be in 4-H and how they can become 4-H’ers too!
While we were talking with the parents, our 4-H’ers and families took the children out into the Urban Garden to visit the Butterfly Tunnel and Alika Rabbit Garden. Before they came back into the classroom, Michael Voss taught everyone how to wash their hands correctly.
As soon as everyone got cleaned up, they returned to the classroom where Farin Fukunaga gave a demonstration on Thermodynamics, changing a liquid into a solid, with his Ice Cream In a Bag lesson. Everyone was invited to put ingredients together in a small zip top bag, put ice cubes into a bigger zip top bag, put the small bag into the big bag, and……. SHAKE, SHAKE, SHAKE!!! (The bag, not their body, but some of the kids were shaking with their body too!!) After much noise and cold hands, everyone could add some toppings and enjoy their ice cream! Thanks Farin for sharing the lesson and fun!

| Hey! Isn't That the Same Orange Fish?! |
What began with bread and fish ended with imaginary blobs and snacks at a March 27 get-together between the Warriors and the 4-H Seekers 4-H clubs. The joint meeting was part of an effort to increase fellowship between the older and newer 4-H clubs.
The 4-H Seekers went to Hoomaluhia Botanical Gardens in Kaneohe earlier in the morning to catch and release fish in the large pond. Some of the Warriors arrived later to join in the fun. The orange fish seemed to like bread as bait. The Warriors suspect some of their members caught the same fish several times.
After fishing, the two clubs hiked back up to the visitor center to have a 4-H meeting. Warriors club president Staci Kohashi led the group in a discussion of the upcoming Fashion Revue. Seekers president Jacey Moriguchi distributed their club’s newsletter that described the technology projects the members have done. The Warriors then shared their club photo albums with years of activities and events inside.
In the second half of the meeting, Warriors Sean and Joelle Lee and their mother Lisa led the two clubs in drama exercises from the 4-H Theater Arts project books. The group began with an ice breaker, then continued with breathing exercises and several drama activities, such as passing an imaginary ball of energy and talking about their imagination. Everyone seemed to be having fun!
The afternoon ended with snacks and promises of more intra-club communication.
The Warriors 4-H Club
| State Livestock Fair |
Join in the educational exhibits, games and fun at the State Livestock Show at Kualoa Ranch. The Fair dates are July 8,9 &10. The livestock judging, showmanship of lambs, swine, beef and dairy heifers will take place. The livestock 4-Hers who have been raising their animals during this year will have a chance to show and sell their animals. In addition to having the livestock show, they want the other 4-Hers to set up educational exhibits or do some type of 4-H project activity on Saturday July 9. Any clubs interested in helping out at this Fair, please contact Rose at 622-4185 as soon as possible. Hope to hear from you soon.
