President's Message

Aloha 4-H Leaders, Members, and Parents,

How about that spooky Halloween! Now that we’ve all had our share of tricks and treats, we can reflect on October. Thanks to everyone who took time out of their busy schedules to volunteer in 4-H community events such as the Kualoa Ranch County Fair, Youth Day at the State Capital, and Kids Fest at Bishop Museum.

November will be a relatively quiet 4-H month, but it’s not too early to start preparing for Communications Fair in December, Food Show in March, or even Record Books, due in the Summer. Planning ahead makes everything so much less stressful!

Enjoy Thanksgiving!

Aloha,
Farin Fukunaga

OAHU EVENTS

November News

October was a busy month with clubs getting reorganized for the new 4-H year and participating in the service projects that were scheduled for the month.  Thank you to the clubs who have turned in your enrollment forms.   Emily Heydon wrote a nice reflection of her experience at Kualoa Country Fair, please read her article in this newsletter.

On October 23rd, Oahu County 4-Hers spent their Sunday at the Bishop Museum participating in the 7th annual Hawai‘i Pacific Health Kids Fest. Every year they ask us to participate with the Germ City Tent where the youngster learned to properly wash their hands. Thanks to Becky Kanenaka whose passion is for everyone to learn how to properly wash their hands and coordinates the setting up of the tent and training the 4-Hers. Properly washing your hands will prevent germs from spreading. Three 4-Hers from Farrington FCCLA 4-H Club set up a nutrition and exercise activities as part of their project. Jane Raquinio and Amy Piera  did a fat be gone game in which the youth needed to select the snacks that have fat in it. Jay Raquinio did the heavy pack exercise activity. It seems the youth coming through their activities were having fun and learning at the same time.

It was a fun day watching the thousands of kids going to all the educational activities and learning about health.  The Warriors 4-H Club also set up promotional 4-H materials.  Thanks to all the 4-Hers and leaders who participated and made our booth fun.   Mahalo to the Hawaii Pacific Health Organization for having 4-H participate in this worthwhile event since it was started seven years ago.

Oahu 4-H Food Show

The date for the annual 4-H food show has been chosen as well as its location. The food show will take place on Saturday March 10, 2012 and will be on Fort Shafter. The club taking the lead for the food show this year is the Keyblade Bearers 4-H Club. The club is considering changing one of the categories for the event. Specifically they are considering changing the International Foods category and replacing it with a Vegetarian Foods category. The reasoning behind this is to emphasize healthy decisions in light of the fact that we have received a grant in support of fighting obesity. More information will follow. For any question please contact the Keyblade Bearers 4-H Club.

National 4-H Congress

On Thanksgiving Day after a nice Thanksgiving dinner, two Oahu 4-Hers, Dustin Borromeo and Dwayne-Marie Edades, along with 14 other 4-Hers from Maui and Kona plus two adult chaperon Melissa Yoshioka and Joan Chong will be traveling to Atlanta, Georgia to participate in the National 4-H Congress along with 1000 other 4-Hers from the across the United States.  This year’s theme is “Become a Catalyst of Change in which they will participate in educational workshops, listen to inspirational speakers and tour parts of Atlanta.  It is a great experience for them to meet with other 4-Hers.  They will also become “instance celebrities” as they perform the hula on International night.

Both Dustin and Dwayne-Marie are from the Farrington FCCLA 4-H Club.  They completed their 4-H Portfolio back in May of this year and were selected to attend this National Event for outstanding 4-Hers.  As part of their FCCLA 4-H membership they have participated in various leadership roles in both organizations and in 4-H activities such as Ahaolelo, Food Show, Fashion Show and many community service projects.  Since FCCLA and 4-H have similar goals they are able to apply what they do in both organizations to compliment the life skills they learn.  Hope the both of you enjoy this once in a life time opportunity and come back to share with the rest of the other 4-Hers.

Rabbiteers 4-H Club’s Service Project

My family’s 4-H club, the Rabbiteers of Oahu, enjoyed participating in a 4-H service project at the Kualoa 2nd Annual Country Fair on October 1 at Kualoa Ranch.  The fair was held in conjunction with the All-Girls’ Rodeo. My parents, siblings, and I took our three Dutch rabbits to the ranch where we helped organize a 4-H booth with other 4-H small pet and livestock clubs.

4-H leader Ronald Darlington, the Hays Family, the Lockwood Family, my family, and 4-H members from the West Side Small Animal Club and Leeward Paniolo Livestock Club worked together to educate several hundred ranch visitors about our animals.  We gave the visitors and their children the unforgettable experience of interacting with rabbits, chickens, and goats.

As a military family, my siblings and I have shown Dutch rabbits in 4-H throughout the United States for the past nine years.  The ranch visitors enjoyed watching me, my brother, Caleb, and my sister, Lizzie, as we handled our rabbits and flipped them on their backs to demonstrate showmanship maneuvers.  They also enjoyed watching us demonstrate how to clip the rabbits’ toenails.  Some of the visitors’ most interesting questions included, “What is so special about these rabbits?”, “How big will they get?”, and “Do they live inside or outside?”

This was a very successful 4-H outreach program.  4-H leaders and members had a lot of fun teaching others about their animals, while many visitors asked how they could acquire an animal and join a 4-H small animal or livestock club.

4-H National Youth Science Day a Success with Military Programs

Dozens of youth across the Pacific participated in the National Youth Science Day by taking part in an experiment with wind energy.  Youth from Camp Zama Japan; Camp Humphreys Korea; Marine Corps Base Hawaii and Camp Walker Korea all reported successfully completing the experiment, which involved creating a prototype wind turbine and recording energy from it. Science kits were provided to each site upon request by the Hawaii 4-H Youth Development Military Partnership.

If your program completed the experiment, let us know with a photo! You can email it to Carmen: military4-h@ctahr.hawaii.edu.

Pilot OMK & YES Demo Takes Flight

The Army Reserve Center at Fort Shafter Flats played host to the first ever Operation: Military Kids (OMK) and Project Youth Extension Service (Project YES) Youth Programming Demo.  The October 28th activities demo marked the first training collaboration between OMK and YES, two USDA Military Partnership programs that strive to support the growing needs of military youth affected by deployment.  The intent of this activities training was to give participants greater insight into the experiential learning process in which both OMK and Project YES utilize as a tool to build life skills that essentially help military children and youth sustain through all phases of deployment.  Employing the hands-on and interactive approach, the child, youth and family programs participants found their inner extroverted-selves through resiliency fostering activities such as Peace Puppetry, Houdini’s Handcuffs and Rapping.  To learn more about OMK or Project YES, please visit:
