Aliamanu Teen

Aliamanu Middle School and Teen Center's two clubs, Cooking and Gardening, have had a very active year so far. 4-Hers began the year in the Cooking club learning basics of cooking, such as measuring, cutting and learning how to read a recipe. The club holds meetings and activities each week, and have increased their skills from 2-3 ingredient foods to make Fried Won Tons, complete with hand-made dough. When 4-H Extension staff had the opportunity to visit the cooking club in December, they were making "11 Minute Jam" which the 4-Hers noted, was more like "30 Minute Jam!" The club divided into two groups, each cutting, measuring and boiling their own fruit of choice, either strawberries or pineapple. Leader Maria asked them questions throughout their process, about how they thought things were progressing, and at the end, helped them reflect on why things took longer than the directions said they would. The youth instigated a "taste testing" to compare their homemade jam on biscuits with what was in the fridge, from the store. Most agreed that the homemade tasted better, but that the store-bought jam was more "jam-like" in consistency. Youth were engaged, excited and some felt like they might want to try making this at home with other fruit.

The clubs also report successfully growing sweet potatoes, which have not yet been harvested from the small garden outside the teen center.
