Livestock

The Livestock Program is the largest 4H project on Molokai.  It is also the oldest program, and was once the ONLY project done on Molokai.  In the previous years there were four livestock clubs along with sewing and textile clubs, a woodwork club and an agriculture club.  These clubs slowly fell apart due to the youth growing up and turning more towards sports and other interest programs.   Because of the low numbers, leaders decided to combine all interested youth into one island wide club.  In the year 2000 the club members decided on a name for the new and improved club.

Molokai 4H Livestock Club, 2003

Text Box: “Molokai 4-H Livestock Club” consists of Senior, Junior and Clover Bud members ranging from the ages of 5-17. Our club is guided and advised by our parents, leaders and volunteers. We have about 20 club members and hope to gain more interest of other youth and parents. Our club holds meetings monthly to discuss upcoming events and to monitor progress of the animal projects. Youth officers hold club meetings using parliamentary procedure and are guided by the club leader.

Text Box: Each year we do at least two service projects to give back to our community. Some service activities we did in the past included highway clean-ups, graveyard clean-ups, canned food drives and clothes drives for the needy. Every month at least 3-4 members do a demonstration on anything that they want to. We always have a wide variety of demonstrations including but not limited to cooking, health, safety, origami, knot tying and exercise. Demonstrations help us to exercise public speaking. After each club meeting we separate into 2 groups: Clover Buds and Juniors & Seniors and have workshops. We look forward to our club meetings. We have fun and learn something different all the time.

Text Box: We have three different age groups in the Livestock Program. The Clover Buds are youth ranging from age 5-9. They are able to raise rabbits and poultry (which include turkeys too!). These are 3-month projects that youth raise for exhibit only. They are also auctioned at the end of the Expo in July. Clover Buds at the age of 8 are able to raise a Market Goat project. This project is also a 3-month project that is a Molokai County project. The youth do not compete at state level. This is good practice for judging, showmanship and learning responsibility.

Text Box: Junior club members are youth ranging from ages 9 to 12. They are able to raise Market Goat Projects as well as Market Swine Projects. Both are 3-month projects that the 4Her would raise and finish for the annual Expo. Along with swine and goats, Juniors are able to raise Market Steers. These projects are part of the Expo judging class.

Text Box: The Senior members are able to raise Market Swine and Market Beef Steers. The Senior members are teens ranging from age 13 to 19. The Market Beef project can be a 7 to 9 month project. This is a long-term project that takes a lot of hard work and parent help. All livestock projects include looking for the right animal, feeding and watering daily, exercising, grooming and spending time with them daily. “Learning by doing” is the best way to gain experience in these types of projects.
