PROJECT OBJECTIVES
• To gain skills in public speaking, organizing a presentation, and be an expert on a particular topic.
• To develop skills in demonstration and to do a show and tell presentation on a particular topic.
• To be able to compose, create and focus on a subject matter through photographs.
• To be able to express creativity on a poster using painting, drawing, collage, felt pens or other art media.
• To be able to create an exhibit utilizing photos or other art materials and captions.
• To be able to organize the content and write a creative story.
• To be able to organize and produce a video with appropriate audio, lighting and use of camera.
• To be able to organize and produce a Power Point presentation using digital images.
Calling all youth ages 5 to 19 to participate in the 14th Annual 4-H Communications Fair sponsored by the Oahu County 4-H Program. The Fair features speech and demonstration contests as well as presentations from the prejudged photography, exhibit, poster, creative writing, Video and PowerPoint entries. ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION
Each participant of this event should be registered as a 4-H member with the Oahu 4-H Organization. Youth who have not previously registered can still participate by filling out the 4-H Youth Enrollment (Form Y-1); Parental Permission and Medical Information Summary (Form Y 2); and Media and Informational Release (Form Y-3) and submit these forms with the club registration. These enrollment forms are available from the Extension Offices or from the 4-H website, http://www2.ctahr.hawaii.edu/4h/forms.asp.

- Entries. All entries: photographs, exhibits, posters, creative writing, video tape, or diskette/CDs should be submitted with the correct forms.
- Deadlines CF2, CF3, Y-1, Y-2 and Y-3 forms received on or postmarked before Friday, March 7, 2008. CF1 must be received on or postmarked before Thursday, March 20, 2008 to the Wahiawa Extension Office, Honolulu Extension Office or Urban Garden Center. Please have registration forms typed or written in pen, no pencil-written forms will be accepted. Forms that are unreadable or incomplete will be returned back to the participant.
AWARDS AND RECOGNITION
Note: All participants will receive an individual or group recognition award for participating. Participants who submit forms by the deadline will be eligible for the purple ribbons and top of show (see descriptions below).
- Individual – All Juniors, Intermediate and Seniors will receive either a blue, red or white ribbon and be judged according to the Danish Awards System for participating. All participants will be judged against a standard (blue, red and white standards) rather than against each other. Thus, it is possible to have all blue winners (the highest award) if all contestants reach the blue standard. On the other hand, it is also possible to have only red and white award winners. All Cloverbuds are a non-competitive division and will receive three written positive remarks and a green participatory ribbon.
- Group – Participants may work as a group involving two or more individuals. Individual ribbons will be awarded.
- First Time – All first time participants in the Communication Fair will be recognized. Please indicate on the form if 4-Her is a first time participant.
- Purple Ribbons – All participants (except Cloverbuds) will be recognized who have an outstanding Communication Fair entry as determined by the judges.
- Top of Show – All participants in each division (except Cloverbuds) will be able to compete for Top of Show. The top scorer in each age division (Junior, Intermediate, Senior), with at least two competitors, and receiving a blue or red standard will be awarded the Perpetual Trophy and purple rosette ribbon. Participants must fulfill the following requirements to qualify for this recognition: Participate in an individual speech or a demonstration, and must enter one of the following:
- 2 photographs in 2 different categories, or
- an exhibit, or
- a poster, or
- a creative writing, or
- a video, or
- a PowerPoint

GUIDELINES
- Speeches
- Participants will present a speech using one of the categories listed below.

- Time Limit:
- Cloverbuds: 3 minutes
- Junior/Intermediate: 5 minutes
- Senior: 10 minutes
- Form: Submit CF1 and copy of speech
- Demonstrations
- Participants will present a demonstration that will show and tell how to do a particular topic.
- General Guidelines:
- Participants may select any topic that is interesting, informative and practical.
- Visual aids should be included in each presentation.
- Time Limit:
- Cloverbuds: 3 minutes
- Junior/Intermediate: 5-10 minutes
- Senior: 5-15 minutes
- Participants will need to bring their own equipment (hot plates, judges' samples, visuals, etc.)
- Form: Submit CF1
- Photographs
- Participants will enter photographs that focus on a subject matter and the theme “Happily Ever After”. (points will be deducted if the photo does not pertain to the theme)
- Regular and digital photographs will be accepted.

- Print sizes: Minimum size 4" by 6" and maximum size of 8" by 12". Prints should be mounted with about a one-inch border on matt board or equivalent.
- Photos must have been taken from March 2007 to March 2008.
- Up to eight (8) entries (one picture in each category) per person.
- Labeling information. There will be no titles on the front. You will print on the back: your name, group affiliation, title of photo, category and division. During the photo judging, the committee will print titles, division and category for all the photos.
- Judging will be on storytelling ability, composition, photographic quality, originality, mounting and title or caption.
- Form: Submit CF2 and all photography entries.
- Exhibits
- Participants will develop an exhibit using art materials and the theme “Happily Ever After”.
- Size: Maximum 36" by 72"
- Must be free standing. Can include photos, captions and other project materials.
- Labeling information on back: print name, group affiliation and division.
- Judging will be based on creativeness, clarity and neatness.
- Exhibits may be used for Oahu 4-H marketing and promotion, unless request is made for its return.
- Form: Submit CF3 and exhibit.
- Posters
- Participants will create a poster using art materials and the theme “Happily Ever After”.
- Size: 22" wide by 28" high
- Medium: Any appropriate medium may be used (painting, drawing, collage, felt pens, etc.).
- Labeling information on back: print name, group affiliation and division.
- Judging: Judging will be based on creativity, originality, and overall design relating to the theme.
- Posters may be used for Oahu 4-H marketing and promotion, unless request is made for its return.
- Form: Submit CF3 and poster.
- Creative Writing
- Participants will use their creative writing skills and the theme “Happily Ever After” to write a story.
- Length:
- Cloverbuds and Juniors: 1-2 pages, typed double-spaced
- Intermediate and Seniors: 2-4 pages, typed double-spaced
- Labeling on first page, upper right hand corner: Print name, group affiliation, and division.
- Judging: Entries are judged on:
- Content - Is the subject informative? Does the material reflect current concerns? Does it reflect one’s personal experiences? Interesting to a general audience? Is there a clear purpose for everything included?
- Organization - Is material organized? Does lead paragraph attract reader? Is reader led paragraph by paragraph to end of article?
- Style - Is article readable? Easily understood? Correct grammar?
- Appearance - Is typed copy double-spaced and neat?
- Form: Submit CF3 and creative writing.
- Video
- Participants will develop a video using the theme “Happily Ever After”.
- Length: 5-15 minutes in length.
- The video must have been made from March 2007 to March 2008.
- Format: VHS preferred, but all others will be accepted.
- Labeling on top and side of tape: Print name, group affiliation, and division.
- Entries are judged on:
- Creativity
- Message
- Effective use of media (audio, use of camera, lighting, etc.)
- Form: Submit CF3 and video tape.
- Powerpoint
- Participants will do a PowerPoint using the theme “Happily Ever After”.
- Length: 5 minutes in length.
- The PowerPoint must have been made from March 2007 to March 2008.
- Any software program that generates a slide presentation using digital images similar to PowerPoint can be used.
- Labeling on front of diskette or CD: Print name, group affiliation, and division.
- Entries are judged on:
- Creativity
- Message
- Effective use of media (audio, use of camera, lighting, etc.)
- Form: Submit CF3 and diskette/CD.
