President’s Message |
The year is starting to come to a close, so a new executive board will be elected soon. At this past council meeting, nominations were made for the 2006-2007 executive board. Please come to our meeting on May 21, 2006, to vote for your new executive board. If you were nominated, make sure that you attend the council meeting.
This past month we had our County Camp at Camp Mokuleia. I would like to thank Brittany Chang for making the camp a great experience.
Also 4-Hers the Speech and Demo contest and the photography contest are right around the corner. The speeches and demos are due to Lori Arakaki on April 21 and the photography is due to me on April 21. I encourage each and every 4-Her to participate in both events. Both contests are great experiences to take part in and it also helps you to become a better speaker. The applications for the photography contest was e-mailed to you and put onto the Oahu 4-H site, if anyone has any questions please call me at 626-2710. The photos will be displayed at the achievement banquet.
With the year wrapping up Record Books will be due soon, so if you haven’t already, start working on your record book. With this record book you are able to record the events and activities done through out the year for future knowledge.
I hope everyone has had a wonderful Spring Break, just one more quarter to go until summer vacation. Continue doing your schoolwork and remember that many 4-H deadlines are just around the corner.

The Speech/Demonstration Festival will be held on Saturday, May 13, 2006, 2 pm at the Ag Sciences building. The photography entries will be displayed at this year’s 4-H Achievement.

| • Fundraiser for Council |
Please donate cookies; bars and other bake goods packed in snack size bags. We will sell the items for $1.00 or $2.00. If you have small art and craft item that children would like you can donate those items. Please drop off your items by 2:00 pm at Urban Garden Center on May 5th. If you would like to volunteer to man the booth, please call Rose at 622-4185

| • Oahu 4-H Organization Elections |
The elections meeting will be held on May 21, 2006 at 3:30 p.m. at the Urban Garden Center. The nominations for office will remain open until this meeting; however, write-in and call-in nominations will not be accepted prior to the elections meeting. Nominations will be accepted from the floor during the election meeting and nominees not elected to office may be nominated for other offices during this meeting as well. All nominees must be present at this meeting, or if an emergency should arise, a written statement must be submitted to the Council. All the nominees will get a chance to read their speeches and present their qualifications to the voters. Each 4-H club attending this meeting that is in good standing will be entitled to three voting delegates; two must be members enrolled in the club and one must be a leader of the club. Votes may not be transferred and present officers are ineligible to vote. I have contacted all of the nominees to let them know that their nominations bios would be due for the next newsletter. However, only a few have sent their bios in. I will be contacting them to remind them about the elections meeting and I hope to see you all there! If there are any questions or concerns, please contact me at ilove2seeusmile_79@hotmail.com. The following candidates have provided their campaign speeches:
For President: Hi! I'm Amber Kuitunen, a six -year member of the Na Pilialoha 4-H Club and I am running for the office of President. I am a junior at Mid-Pacific Institute, play the cello in the Hawaii Youth Symphony, participate in Cross-country and Sailing, and a member of the National Honor Society. In the past four years, I have served as your Treasurer, Executive Vice President, President and 1st Vice President. These experiences have provided me with valuable insights to the purpose and functions of the Oahu County Executive Board and council as well as the strengths and weaknesses of the organization. If elected as President, I hope to help other members grow and develop by assuming leadership positions, improve communications, and promote 4-H within our community. As President, I will give you my personal commitment to make 2006-2007 a great year. Please vote for me, Amber Kuitunen for President!
For 1st/2nd Vice President:
Hi, my name is Joli Umetsu and I am running for the office of Vice President. I am currently a junior at Mililani High School and have been a part of the Na Pilialoha 4-H club for six years. Because I have served as the Treasurer and Corresponding Secretary on the executive board, I know the commitments that it takes to serve on the executive board. I am confident that if elected as Vice president, I will serve the exec. board well. Thank you.
Aloha, my name is Hannah Wong and I am running for the office of Vice President. I believe that I am qualified for this job, because I have been Vice President before and I am aware of the job’s responsibilities. This past year, I have been the president, and I hope to continue in trying to allow the 4-Hers to learn by doing. If elected I will also help the president in any way possible. As the vice president I promise to help in setting up events, and also to attend the monthly meetings. Please Vote for Hannah for Vice President!
Aloha 4-Her's! My name is Marissa Matsuyama and I am running for the office of Vice President. I am currently a junior at Iolani School and am a sixth-year member of the Na Pilialoha 4-H club. I feel that I am qualified for this office because I have been 1st Vice President, Executive Vice President, and Secretary over the past three years. Although I may have had some mistakes while in office, but those are what have helped me learn. I have learned that communication is the key. Many people do not respond to their email right away and because of this, I have learned to call people instead. I realize what the responsibilities of the Vice President are and I know that I can fulfill them. Please vote Marissa Matsuyama for Vice President! Thank you!
For Executive Vice President: Hi my name is Thomas Ayers. I believe that I can do an excellent job as your executive vice president. I have extensive experience in 4-H, as I have been a member for 7 years. In addition, I have held county-level leadership positions before, as chairperson of the Tech Team for the Broward County, Florida County Council. I led several 4-Hers and together we helped plan and design a website for the county council. I am enthusiastic about my job. As your EVP, I would not only perform my job, but I would always try to excel in my efforts. Through a combination of my leadership, enthusiasm, and experience, I believe I am the best candidate for Executive Vice President.
For Recording Secretary: Hi! My name is Stacie Nakashima and I am running for recording secretary. I am with the group Just Us and this will be my second year in 4H. Currently, I am a sophomore at Pearl City High School, where I have been the representative at large for the past two years. Therefore, I am involved in many of the student government activities and I have experience in working and cooperating with others. I am also in the marching band, Key Club, and National Honor Society. I am enjoying 4H so far, and I believe that running for secretary will help me to meet new people and experience new things. So please vote for me! Thank you!

Hi, my name is Marissa Matsuyama, a sixth-year member of the Na Pilialoha 4-H club, and I am running for the office of Treasurer. Within my club, I have served as the Treasurer, which taught me how to keep the treasury balanced. Over the past three years I have served on the Executive Board as Secretary, 1st Vice President, and Executive Vice President. These experiences have taught me the value of commitment, leadership, and time management. Because of this, I feel that I am qualified for the office of Treasurer. If I am elected, I will maintain accurate account balances and be sure to have a report for every meeting. Please vote Marissa Matsuyama for Treasurer! Thank you!
Hi, my name is Brittany Chang and I am from the Pot of Gold 4-H Club and I am running for the office of treasurer. I have been with the Pot of Gold 4H club for 6 years and I am the treasurer for our club. I would like to be the treasurer because it would be a good experience for me in the future. I will be able to write checks and balance the checking account. Please vote for me thanks.
For Historian: Hi my name is Hannah Wong, and I am running for the office of Historian. I have been in 4-H for 6 years, and for the past 3 years I have been on the executive board and served as your vice president, treasurer, and this past year as our President. With this experience I am knowledgeable of how a meeting is run, and the tasks of the Historian. I also love taking pictures and combining them to make a presentation. I have used many different programs such as movie makers, power point, and creating DVDs. I hope you'll consider me as your next historian!

| • 4-H Spring Fling... A Wet & Fun One! |
The day started out with a 4-H pep rally, thanks to the coordination of JoeAnne Leonard and the Fort Shafter 4-H’ers. Mr. Dave Pablo, Director of AMR SAS also led everyone in the 4-H Spirit Song.
The group then divided into 5 project areas: Food and Nutrition, Computer and Technology, Fine Arts, Performing Arts and Science where 4-H members shared project activities with others in their groups. In addition, 30 club exhibits featured 4-H projects. The day ended with fun (in door) activities for all. Thank you to host BYC and all the other sites who helped provide activities.

| • Speak Out for Military Kids Presentations |
The Speak Out for Military Kids teams found a perfect way to applaud military families and their children for the daily sacrifices they make and the challenges they overcome by presenting their multi media SOMK presentations that they have been working on during the past 8 weeks. The presentations will now be used to help spread the word in the community of what it is like to be a military child.
Hats off to our SOMK teams from Boys and Girls Club Wahiawa and Aliamanu, AMR Teen Center and Schofield Teen Center for participating in this first time effort. Special thanks to Nelson Acosta, Frank Boswell and Tricia Lam for working with the teams and for helping with the coordination of this project.
We have just received word that a team of youth and adults from Hawaii will have the opportunity to participate in a national SOMK training this summer. Stay tuned for details, as we will be looking for team members willing to commit to this project next year.

State 4-H Events |
| • 2006 4-H Ahaolelo Conference |
Looking for something exciting and educational to do soon after school ends.? Join us for an exciting two nights and three days at Ahaolelo 2006! Due to time constraints with regular school ending and summer school beginning, this seems like the only weekend that Ahaolelo can take place. It will be shorter, but packed full with workshops, night activities, and the Hawaii 4-H Foundation fundraiser lunch. When: June 9 to 11, 2006 (see attached itinerary) Where: University of Hawaii, Manoa Cost: $200.00 ($40.00 - lodging, $100.00 - meals, $60.00 - registration fee & ground transportation Theme: “Youth-Adult Partnership” The youth and adult teams who are participating in the EYSC3 program will start on Thursday afternoon (June 8th). This group will be the workshop presenters and need to prepare their presentations. The Ahaolelo conference is open to all youngsters ages 13 to 19, but if the youth is not a registered 4-H member in the county, he/she is required to fill out Member Enrollment, Form Y-1 before registering. In addition each delegate is required to fill out these two forms located on the 4-H website. 1. Parental Permission & Medical Information Summary, Form Y-2 2. | • State Farm Seeks Youth Advisory Board |
State Farm leadership and some of its key national service-learning and education partners will help select a diverse group of approximately 30 young people ages 17-20 (applicants must turn 17 by 6/30/06 and not turn 20 until after 6/30/06) to serve on this State Farm Youth Advisory Board. Applications are due April 28th.
