Welcome to Oahu 4-H's online newsletter.
In July, Oahu 4-H will be offering 3 weeklong science day camps at the Urban Garden Center for youth who have just completed the 2nd or 3rd grade. The science camps will run from 8:30 am – 3:30 pm. The Malama I Ka Pono curriculum uses the scientific method to explore solutions to problems involving the growth of plants. Working in small teams, the children will be encouraged to make decisions like scientists as they plant and observe plants. Guided by the adult facilitators, the children will work their way through a variety of gardening-related activities. The activities will encourage the day camp participants to think critically, analyze information, communicate and formulate ideas as they experience the joy of learning about plant life. Reading children’s literature, healthy eating, physical activity and expression through artwork is also integrated into the plant science curriculum. The day camps have been offered to youth groups but there are a few spots still open for the July 6-10 and July 13-17 sessions. Call Rose at 622-4185 or email her at roses@hawaii.edu for more information or if you have a 2nd or 3rd grader interested in attending.
Extension Educator Jean Young facilitated an evaluation session as part of the last military 4-H leader training for the school year. She also led the group in a couple of team building activities. Festivities followed by recognizing 4-H club leaders, distributing club charters and awarding special awards. Dr. Gary Heusel helped with the recognition ceremony. Besides awarding leadership certificates to the military 4-H club leaders, special awards were also presented to:
Congratulations also to Maria Tobin (AMR Teen) and Max Siaumau (Bennett Youth) for being selected to serve on the 4-H 101 training team. Maria and Max will assist in providing 4-H 101 training here in Hawaii and also overseas in Japan and Korea.
We welcome you to our OMK Management team!
After many long months, countless volunteer hours and donations, our OMK Mobile Tech Lab bus is rocking and rolling! Thanks to the Boys and Girls Club and CTAHR, the bus has been painted, renovated and equipped to take technology out to the community. The bus made its first public appearance at the Military Appreciation event at the Honolulu Zoo on June 6. While there, Army/USDA Technology Specialist Bob Greenberg provided children opportunities to make Hero cards as well as do a Hawaii OMK internet scavenger hunt. Besides being used for OMK workshops and activities, the Boys and Girls Club will be using the bus to provide technology to children in communities where they do not have facilities. Honk if you see the bus on the road!
You may have noticed that many of the items from the ERL have been removed. Since we no longer have anyone to coordinate the ERL, we decided to close it. HOWEVER, the 4-H juried curriculum (and many non-juried items) are still available at the UGC for club leaders to borrow. If you are interested in any of the 4-H curriculum, it would be easiest if you contact one of the 4-H agents to track the materials down for you.
