Hey Everyone!

I hope all of you who attended the County Camp last month had a great time! Thank you to Tobi Kaneshiro for chairing the event, and also those who helped out with planning. The turn out of people who came was great!

A reminder to all of you, nominations for next year's Executive board will be held at this month's council meeting! Be sure to have your nominations ready. The elections will be held at the following council meeting. All nominees planning on running will have to be present at the election.

As our 4-H year slowly comes to a close, we still have about two more events left! The next upcoming one is the Car Wash Fundraiser. I hope all of you can participate and help us! In early June, we will be having the annual Aha'olelo Conference, where 4-Hers from outer islands join us for a leadership workshop that lasts for approximately 3 days. This is held at UH at Manoa. Be sure to stay updated for more information! Lastly, the achievement banquet will shortly follow. Please stay updated for more information as well.

Aloha Oahu County Leaders and a Happy and Successful 2009 to you and your clubs.  It’s hard to believe that 2008 has come and gone.  It is now time to finalize your membership in the State 4-H Leaders Federation.  Please call Rose Saito at 622-4185 or email her at roses@hawaii.edu with your information—name, contact address, phone, and email address to be a member of the leaders organization.

Oahu County will host the 2010 State Leaders’ Conference to be held in Honolulu on April 10-11 and your help will be greatly appreciated.  At the Leaders’ Training held this past Friday, leaders Linda Lau AhHee (Host/Hostess and Evaluation), Becky Kanenaka (Tours and Workshops), Wanda Kohashi (Decorations and Program), Julia Cabatu and Maryknoll Spotkaeff (Registration) and the Double Deckers (Country Store and Silent Auction) volunteered to chair the committees listed above.  Thank you for your support and we look forward to the help of other leaders.  Evelyn “Oma” Telles is Conference Chair and will be happy to hear from you and the committee you would like to chair. The Betty Zane Shimabukuro Scholarship tickets are now available. Oahu leaders are encouraged to sell the tickets for one of three gifts from each of the five counties. The sale of these $2 each tickets are for the benefit of 4-H leaders county training programs. Oahu's prizes include a two-night stay at Miramar Hotel, a one-week-no-cooking package consisting of seven $25 gift certificates to Oahu eateries, and a $35 value gift box of Oahu goodies. Other county prizes include three gift boxes from each island (Maui, Kauai, Molokai) valued at $35.  Bertha Kaui is in charge of ticket distribution and you can contact me via e-mail bkaui@earthlink.net or call  833-6095. Scholarships of up to $1,500 will be awarded to current 4-H members who have completed at least one year of 4-H work prior to April 1 of the year the application is received. The applicant will need to be enrolled in their freshman year at an accredited college, university, technical or trade school in the fall of the year the applications are due. The application must be postmarked by April 1, 2009. Late applications will not be accepted.

Open to all military and non-military youth, ages 12-18.

The Hawaii Speak Out for Military Kids Communications Training Camp is a 3-day event where young people can talk about being a military kid, create messages, learn writing skills, learn how to make comedy out of their experiences, and gain valuable video-making and editing skills.  At the end of the camp, participants will have created a video from their messages on being a military youth/teen.  The video will be used in other Operation: Military Kids (OMK) events, such as the Ready, Set, Go! Trainings conducted for school personnel and other military community related events.  The camp will prepare youth to be ambassadors for OMK, speak publicly on issues related to military families, deployment and supporting other youth.  The camp will also provide a forum for youth to network, team build and increase confidence levels in relation to leadership and communication.

FAMILY CAMP is a perfect way to have a great mini family getaway at a very affordable price! Family camp provides all meals, accommodations and activities! All you need to do is come out relax and enjoy our beautiful North Shore setting. Activities include Archery, Swimming, Crafts, Kayaking, Hiking, Ropes Course, Climbing Wall, Campfires, Keiki Only Groups and Special Events!

• WHO can attend?  Any active duty or activated reserve member of the Army, Air Force, Navy, USMC, National Guard, Air National Guard, or Coast Guard and is a family that has in the past 12 months been through a deployment, or is preparing for one, or a family who currently has a family member deployed.
• Who is “a family”:  Mother, Father, Brother(s), Sister(s), or an individual that has legal power of attorney to act as loco parentis.
• WHEN:  April 10-12, 2009
• WHY:  Through a network of community partners, such as the YMCA of Honolulu and Camp Erdman, OMK provides youth program opportunities for school age, middle school and teenaged youth and connects them to support resources where they live.  OMK and the YMCA understand the need for youths, and their families to have time together in a supportive environment to rest and recover from the stress of a recent deployment, or to spend quality time together due to a current deployment or someone is soon to be deployed.

This Camp is being provided by Operation: Military Kids. Operation: Military Kids (OMK) is the U.S. Army's collaborative effort with America's communities to support the children and youth impacted by deployment.  This initiative was launched in April 2005.  Operation: Military Kids, as part of the 4-H/Army Youth Development Project, is a vital part of the Army Integrated Family Support Network (AIFSN) delivery system.  4-H is a major partner in the OMK program.

On Kwajalein, the six clubs offered this school year include computer technology, citizenship, photography, drama, nutrition and fitness, and an officer’s club. One of the most popular clubs, the Ebeye Citizenship Club, had their last meeting on Monday, culminating the club’s activities with a cook-out at Emon Beach. After a fun-filled afternoon of swimming, volleyball, and enjoying a meal together, certificates of recognition were presented to each member of the club from both Ebeye and Kwajalein.

The idea for the club originated when the 4-H Kwajalein Site Lead, Susannah Jones, had numerous requests from the children to visit Ebeye. Having worked with the pub¬lic schools on Ebeye in the past, Ms. Jones contacted the Vice Principal of Ebeye Public School, Deo Keju, to recruit his assistance in forming a club of both Kwajalein and Ebeye elementary school students.

The first club meeting took place on Ebeye and included a campus clean-up, which supported the club’s focus on citizenship. For club members, citizenship included being good neighbors, protecting the environment, and making schools and communities better, so cleaning up the Ebeye Public School Campus was the perfect start to practicing good citizenship.

In October, the Ebeye club members visited Kwajalein for the Costume Party, learning a bit more about their American neighbors and their traditions. For the November meeting, everyone traveled to the island of Nene to enjoy an outer-island picnic while being reminded of how lucky residents of Kwajalein and Ebeye are to have such clear waters and beautiful bright blue skies and how important it is to strive to keep it that way. Finally, in December, Kwajalein club members had the privilege of visiting Ebeye once again and participating in the Disability Week Parade and learning about the importance of accepting and honoring all people and our unique differences.

The final cook-out and club recognition ceremony at Emon Beach ended with reciting and signing the 4-H Pledge. With approximately 40 members and club volunteers attending,
the last 4-H Citizenship club event for this school year was a great success, and it is Ms. Jones’ hope that it will continue to bond the children of the two communities together for years to come.

When asked if they would recommend the club to their friends next year, the Kwajalein 4-Her’s gave a resounding “Yes!” The Ebeye Citizenship club certainly proved that if you imagine an idea, set goals to achieve that idea, and believe you can meet your goals, you will, and that’s what 4-H is all about:

Monday March 23 from 10:30-2:30 pm Bennett Youth Center at Schofield Barracks will host “Improv from the Heart” for school-age military 4-Hers.  Activities will include theater games, costuming, singing and improvisation.  To bring 4-Hers to this event, please RSVP by March 16th to Max at 782-2761.

Wednesday March 25 from 9am – 1pm Helemano Youth Center will host “A Day of Science & Gardening” at the Urban Garden Center in Pearl City.  This event is open to military 4-Hers in Cloverbuds.  Activities will include a tour of the gardens and ocean awareness activities.  To bring Cloverbuds to this event, please RSVP to Emily_barnhart@yahoo.com.

Monday March 30 from 9am -1pm Aliamanu & Fort Shafter School Age programs will host “Keiki Hands Creating Change” at AMR.  Activities to include scrap-booking stations, gardening, games and a volley match.  To bring 4-Hers to this event, please RSVP by March 16th to Brandi at 438-1487.

Thursday April 2 Schofield Teen, HMR Teen, AMR Teen and Fort Shafter Teen Centers are combining efforts to host a day of “Health” for nutrition and fitness.

The Operation: Military Kids team is looking for individuals 18 years and older who would be willing to provide OMK/4-H type learning experiences for youth 5-14 years old at various events.  Individuals will be hired on an on-call basis and will be placed as requested.    Most events are during the evening or on weekends.  Applicants should have ‘experiential learning’ experience, be familiar with 4-H curriculum, have prior experience working with youth and have a car.  Please email nakatsuk@hawaii.edu or call 956-7196.

Kohl's Kids Who Care Scholarship Program to Recognize Young Volunteers

"Through the Kohl's Kids Who Care scholarship program, the Kohl's Corporation plans to award a total of over $350,000 in scholarships and prizes this year to more than two thousand kids whose volunteer efforts have made a positive impact on their communities. The program recognizes and rewards young volunteers (ages 6 to 18)  who help make their communities a better place. To be eligible for an award, the young person's efforts should be above and beyond what is normally expected of a child his or her age. Volunteer efforts should have made a positive impact on others and occurred in the last twelve months. The activity cannot be performed solely to benefit a family member. Creativity, initiative, generosity, leadership, and project reach will be evaluated during the judging process... The program will accept nominations from February 1 through March 15, 2009." 2009 National 4-H GIS/GPS Leadership Team Opportunity
GIS/GPS savvy youth/adult 4-H teams are invited to apply to serve on the National 4-H GIS/GPS Leadership Team in 2009. The team works with the national 4-H GIS/GPS leadership to develop resources and strategies to expand 4-H GIS/GPS programs. They also represent 4-H at the annual ESRI International GIS Conference and some state and local programs and events.

4-H Marketing and Communications Intern Opportunity

National 4-H Council is seeking two interns for their marketing and communications department.  The year-long internships are designed for college graduates interested in advertising, public relations, or communications disciplines and include a stipend plus full room and board at the National 4-H Youth Conference Center here in Chevy Chase, MD.  It’s a great opportunity for graduates with a background in 4-H or an interest in youth development.  And with 4-H National Youth Science Day, new digital efforts, PSA development and expanding media relations efforts, there will be plenty of hands-on experience.

 Type of Position:                  Exempt/Full-Time/Temporary (hours per week 37.5)

Job Summary: Serve as essential team member, working closely with the Director of Public Relations and Director of Marketing to implement national 4-H communications strategies. Be part of a fast-paced environment where you will have a chance to participate in a wide variety of marketing and communications projects, including:

• interviewing, editing, and writing stories for national online and print newsletters;
• enhancing content for new national website www.4‑H.org<http://www.4%1eH.org>;
• writing and disseminating news releases;
• developing electronic communications for 4-H community;
• development of Public Service Advertising and measurement of coverage;
• digital media and social networks ;
• environmental scans and market research;
• coordination of communications workshops, special events, conferences, and presentations.

Assist other National 4-H Council teams, including the President’s Team and Resource Development, to complete special projects and tasks. Other duties as assigned.

Qualification: Bachelor’s degree with coursework or experience in business, public relations, advertising, communications, journalism, and/or marketing. Direct experience with 4-H or youth development preferred. Computer and electronic proficiency necessary, including: Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; and online research. Familiarity with social networking functions and Web 2.0/gadget applications a plus. Ability to learn other software programs as necessary. Enthusiasm and attention to detail and accuracy a must.
