Oahu 4-H - Newsletters

We have a few more months left in the 4H year, but we still have a couple more events to look forward to. Aha’olelo will be in the beginning of June, just after school ends. Contact Aunty Rose if you are interested in attending. The carwash fundraiser will also be in June, chaired by Dayna Domingo. And lastly, the achievement banquet will be held in July, chaired by Aunty Wanda. Further information will soon be announced. The elections for officers will be at the next council meeting and every individual present counts for the voting! Be sure to come and bring at least 1 leader and 2 members from your club to vote!

Another 4-H year is coming to an end. It is time for 4-Hers to reflect back and record what they have done in 4-H throughout this year. The portfolios are due to me by May 15, 2009. Those who want to apply for National 4-H Congress will need to fill out the senior record book/portfolio. You need to be 14 years old as of January 1st. The portfolio includes the senior record book and story. The portfolio is due to me by May 15, so I can look it over and if there corrections I can work with the 4-Her. The state deadline is May 26th and I need to send the portfolio to Kona.

The County deadline for Cloverbud, Junior and Senior record books is June 15th since Achievement will be later this year. Keeping good records will help you remember what you did throughout the years. It will also tell a story of what you have accomplished throughout the years. It may not seem important to you now, but later on when you need to fill out applications, the information you record will come in very handy.

Do you want to meet new friends or renew past friendships? If so, then plan on attending Ahaolelo 2009! It will be June 10-13, 2009 at the University of Hawaii. The cost is $265.00, which includes your meals, housing at Frear Hall (the new dorms), ground transportation and workshop materials. The theme this year is: “Are You Ready for SET and Leadership to”! You will see first hand what some of the science related activities happening in the CTAHR laboratories.

The Ahaolelo conference is open to all youngster ages 13 to 19, but if the youth is not a registered 4-H member in the county, he/she is required to fill out Member Enrollment, Form Y-1 before registering.

Please let me know as soon as possible by calling 622-4185 if you are interested in attending Ahaolelo. If this is your first Ahaolelo, the Council will pay $50 to help defray the cost.

The State 4-H Leaders’ Federation thanks all the leaders for their support in getting all the donations from other leaders and friends. A donation of $3,362 was realized for the 1,681 ticket donations received. The 2-night stay at the Miramar was the best seller followed by the Oahu eateries.

Remember to mark your calendars for the next Leaders’ Conference on April 11-12, 2010 on Oahu. The Committees will be meeting soon to plan a great meeting. If you can help, please let Oma Telles know what you would like to do. Your help is needed to put on a great Conference for all the leaders—this is your conference.

For the very first time, the Hawaii 4-H Youth Development Program is supporting Army 4-H clubs in Korea. There are three Army sites in Korea (Yongsan, Deagu and Humprehys) and each of them offer 4-H clubs through their youth programs. Each of the 4-H clubs is registered through Oahu 4-H. Hawaii Extension staff offers support by providing 4-H club leader training and some materials.

Yongsan currently offers 8 4-H clubs – a community/citizenship club and project clubs in cooking, sports and fitness, technology, photography, multi cultural, fine arts, and drama and theatre. On April 3, the Yongsan site held a 4-H Open House for parents and friends and each of their clubs were able to share what they have been doing in their 4-H clubs.

Atsugi is the first Japan Navy site to organize a 4-H club. Under the direction of Mr. Ted Roberts, the 4-H Theatre club has been meeting and practicing for a production set for April 24, 2009.

The club has acquired costumes from their local second hand shop. Luckily for them, the manager of the shop is the mother of one of their club members and she donated the costumes to the club!

Club members also made accessories such as hats, magic wands and Tin Man plating from construction paper and paint. They also painted a large mural for a scenery backdrop using water paints and butcher paper.

The club is now busily rehearsing their lines. As they say in show business, break a leg, Atsugi 4-H Club!

Build-A-Bear Workshop Giving Programs
"The Build-A-Bear Workshop Bear Hugs Foundation supports charities in the United States and Canada through the following special grant programs: Children's Health & Wellness: Champ-A Champion Fur Kids grants provide direct support for children in the areas of health and wellness.... Grant request deadlines are at the end of April, July, and October.... Literacy and Education: Grants provide support for children in literacy and education programs... Grant request deadlines are at the end of February, May, August, and November. In addition, organizations seeking unrestricted support for children, families, and animals or for wild animals and the environment are encouraged to apply for grants through the Build-A-Bear Workshop Foundation, a nonprofit organization.... Grants range between $1,000 and $10,000 each."

Nick Offers Grants and Features 4-H Million Trees Project On-Air
Nickelodeon is offering grants ranging from $2,500 to $5,000 to 10 Green Teams—extraordinary youth across the nation that are helping to make smart, eco-friendly changes in their home, school and community. This initiative is a part of the "Big Green Help," an environmental awareness campaign and kid-led movement that provides information and tools to help explain climate change to young people, and connects them to energy-saving and earth-friendly activities in their everyday lives.
This is a great opportunity for 4-H'ers that are currently engaging in environmental projects. Youth can register their projects online—starting on Earth Day, April 22, and through the end of the year. Details about "The Big Green Help" and the grants are available online at 4-H.org.

Scholarships for Military Children and Spouses
ThanksUSA is planning to give 500 deserving military dependents (children age 24 and under or spouses) $3,000 scholarships to attend school this fall. Scholarship recipients will be selected on the basis of financial need, academic record, demonstrated leadership, participation in school and community activities, and a goal statement. Preference will be given to children or spouses of service personnel killed or injured during active duty.

To be eligible for these scholarships you must be a dependent child or spouse of an active-duty service member (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps or Coast Guard). Visit the ThanksUSA Scholarship website for further eligibility details.

The scholarship application deadline for the 2009 fall-term is May 15, 2009, or until 10,000 applications are received (whichever occurs first). If 10,000 applications are received before May 15, 2009, then a notice will be posted on the ThanksUSA home page.

Enhancing Activity & Nutrition - Resources for Communities
"We Can!™ stands for Ways to Enhance Children's Activity & Nutrition. We Can! is a national education program designed for parents and caregivers to help children 8-13 years old stay at a healthy weight. Parents and caregivers are the primary influencers for this age group. We Can! offers parents and families tips and fun activities to encourage healthy eating, increase physical activity and reduce sedentary or screen time. It also offers community groups and health professionals resources to implement programs and fun activities for parents and youth in communities around the country. Four of the National Institutes of Health have come together to bring you We Can!"
