"It's the Climb"

Thank you to everyone for participating in the 2009 Achievement Banquet. It was a big success and everyone enjoyed the food, program, and camaraderie. The artistic centerpieces and entertaining music video that reflected the theme, “The Climb” were a big hit. There was even a guest appearance by Hannah Montana! Much Mahalos to the Warriors, led by Wanda Kohashi, for coordinating this year end activity. Thank you also to Pot of Gold for manning the registration table, Just Us for the cute favors, Renee Chung for picking up the lei, John Fielding for providing the sound and music, the Clover Kids for the unique centerpieces, Farrington FCCLA for coordinating the Silent Auction, and to everyone for contributing desserts and cleaning up. It was “The Climb” this year and we hope to reach the peaks of success in the very near future.

Meeting our Navy Partners in Japan

This past month, we were able to introduce 4-H to Navy staff at the Atsugi, Yokusaka and Sasebo bases in Japan through 4-H 101 training.  Teen staff from Camp Zama also joined us at the training at Atsugi Navy base.  A total of 85 staff participated in the three two-day trainings.    We are looking forward to welcoming 4-H clubs from these bases to be part of the Hawaii 4-H Youth Development program.

Our Japan training team included DeAnn Acosta, USDA/Army Youth Development Specialist and Maria Tobin, Aliamanu Teen Center staff.  Maria was selected from her peers to be part of this traveling training team.

In October, our training team will travel to Korea to share 4-H 101 with the Army and Navy staff there.

Adobe Youth Voices International Photo Competition - Round 2
(Deadline: November 1)

When written in Chinese or Japanese, the word "crisis" is composed of two characters--one represents crisis or danger, and the other represents hope or opportunity. We have taken this as inspiration for our first-ever international photo competition. "Crisis and Hope" offers an exciting opportunity for youth around the world to express themselves and make their voices heard - on both what is challenging and what gives hope in today's difficult world. Winning photographs will be showcased online, in a traveling exhibit, and in a book. The call for photos is part of Adobe Youth Voices, a global youth media initiative, in collaboration with WKCD (What Kids Can Do). This contest is open to all young people, anywhere in the world, between the ages of 12 and 19. Learn more at: http://www.whatkidscando.org/AYV_Photo_Competition/Guidelines_-__Round_Two.html

Tennessee 4-H Exchange Opportunity

Bedford County (Tennessee) 4-H’ers are seeking to set up an exchange program with other 4-H members.  Bedford County is home of the National Walking Horse Celebration and of the Sharpie (marker).  Bedford is also known as pencil city because of the many pencil factories. We have been involved in Exchanges for almost 30 years. We are located about an hour south of Nashville. Some of the things that we do when hosting: tour local Walking Horse Farm, tour Jack Daniels Distillery, spend a day in Nashville – Grand Ole Opry, Country Music Hall of Fame, Take a ride on the General Jackson, travel east to Chattanooga and go white water rafting down the Ocoee River, go about an hour south to Huntsville, AL to the Space and Rocket Museum and a huge water park called Point Mallard, visit historical Civil War Sites, have cook outs and lots of fun. We have also toured some caves and we could travel to Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. We try to cater our activities to the groups that are coming. Our group will be small this year with about 6 but we could easily host up to 10 kids plus adults.  The kids range in age from 13 – 19.  We are on schedule to host this year (2010) and travel in 2011.  If you are interested in being part of this exchange program, please contact:  Emily Osterhaus, Bedford County Extension-2105 Midland Rd., Shelbyville, TN 3716.  Ph. 931-684-5971or email: eosterha@tennessee.edu
