President's Message

Aloha 4-H Leaders, Members, and Parents,

Congratulations everybody for another successful Fashion Show. I wasn’t able to make it, but I’m sure our 4-Hers did a great job modeling their clothing as well as with the photography and 2-D art.

Would you like to be on the Executive Board? If you are a 4-Her in the 7th grade or above, or know anyone who is, we ask you to look into an Exec Board officer position for next year. You’ll be helping the community, and building life skills. If you are interested, contact Jake Lockwood. Elections will be held at the May council meeting. All candidates must attend.

Coming up is the Achievement Banquet. It’s a great way to wrap up the 4-H year, say farewell to the seniors, and meet the new officers. More info will come out shortly.

The year is winding down, so start working on you record books!

Aloha,
Farin Fukunaga

Farin Fukunaga for Treasurer
Show me the Money!

Aloha Oahu County 4-H! As you all know, I’m Farin Fukunaga, the current President of the Exec Board, and I am running for office Treasurer. Many of you know me from many years of 4-H, but let me tell you why I’m qualified to be your next Treasurer: 1) I feel that I have become well accustomed to working with the Exec Board from my experiences as Vice President, Sergeant at Arms, and President. 2) I love numbers. Being responsible for all of 4-Hs money is a large task, but I believe that I can handle the math and responsibility. 3) I want 4-H to be successful. From my time in 4-H, I have seen how event like the Fashion Show, Food Show, and Communications Fair has helped 4-Hers develop skills such sewing, cooking, public speaking, discipline, and responsibility. I would like to continue being part of this uplifting tradition. Elections are May 20, 2012, and I hope to see you there. Good luck to all candidates, and remember to vote Farin for Treasurer!

Kathleen Corpuz  (Vice President, Sgt. At Arms)

Aloha! I am Kathleen Corpuz, a sophomore at Farrington High School and a member of the Farrington FCCLA, Hawaii Meth Project and T-Shirt Theatre. For the past two years, I have served as the Vice President of the Class of 2014. I enjoy serving our community, and therefore am active in events such as the Foster Family Holiday Luncheon, Kids Fest, Leeward Family Festival and the Festival of Giving.

As the Class of 2014’s Vice President, I helped to plan and implement our events and projects.  We fundraised, and organized ourselves in class spirit competitions. I was also a part of a theatre group where I learned to express my feelings and share my opinions to others. But becoming a member of FCCLA has made the biggest impact in my life. I began to attend a variety of events and became aware of the need to help the community. Just a year ago, I worked with my friends on a project about building relationships and how we were able to maintain it. We competed in both the state and national divisions to share our concern. We won gold in both divisions and it inspired me to keep working on new projects every year.

This year, I volunteered to chair the Oahu county 4-H Communications Fair. It was a lot of stress, but I had fun organizing the fair and it taught me a lot of leadership skills. I used my knowledge to advertise the event using social media, email, flyers, and newsletters. I also met other members from different schools. The Communications Fair was successful with everyone’s help.  This event helped me realize how 4-H is such a diverse organization. Now, I want to continue to learn and develop my leadership skills to strengthen our 4-H club and have fun!

Amy Peria (Vice President, Secretary)

I, Amy Peria am a sophomore at Wallace Rider Farrington High school. I am the youngest of two children and I am very proud to say that the experiences I've had shaped me to who I am today. My first leadership experience began as a third grader at the College of St. Michael the Archangel where I was the manager of my group during cleaning hours. The following year, I was elected as president. From that moment on, I realized that I love being a leader. Although I knew that the class council elections were a popularity contest in high school, I decided to run for a position on the Class of 2014 council.  Sadly, I was not elected, this experience gave me the determination to become the leader I have always wanted to be. I am currently the Vice President of Competitive Events for the Farrington FCCLA chapter, the largest in the state.  I am also on the school's Varsity Tennis team.

I am a two year member of Farrington FCCLA 4-H club.  Jane Raquinio and myself developed and conducted a game, we called ‘Fat-Be-Gone’ where we were able to reach out to children ages 5-12 years old. This game is about making healthy choices. Children selected healthy and unhealthy foods and placed the items on a large ‘plate.’  The children and their parents learned about making healthy food choices, foods with healthy and unhealthy fats.   We conducted this game at the annual Kids Fest held in October at the Bishop Museum.  I attended the ‘Get Fueling for Health’ workshop in January at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa.   This workshop allowed us to dorm at the University of Hawaii and learn about planning a healthy diet, the importance of physical activity, and how to read nutrition fact labels. These experiences with 4-H provided me the opportunities to not only learn about being healthy, but also to teach others about healthy eating.  These lessons made me become more aware of my health.

Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) helped me grow as a leader.  During my freshman year, I conducted a project called Solving Friendship Problems. I was able to reach out to my peers about the consequences of unresolved friendship problems. We wrote and performed mini skits and presented an interactive presentation to five classes. This project helped my partner and myself win a gold medal at the Hawaii State Career and Technical Student Organization Conference.  We then represented Hawaii at the National FCCLA Leadership Conference in Anaheim, California last July.  We brought home silver medals for our project.  At the 2012 Hawaii State CTSO Conference, Jane Raquinio and myself were awarded gold medals for our ‘Prevention Against Cholesterol’ project.  As a teenager who has high levels of cholesterol, I did not want the younger generation to experience what I have gone through. Therefore, I decided to raise awareness among children ages 8-15 years old about cholesterol.  We designed and implemented a game, ‘Fat-Be-Gone’ at Kids Fest, the annual HMSA family fair.  We also led workshops at Kalakaua Middle School to educate students about the dangerous illnesses that is caused by high levels of cholesterol.  Once again, I am blessed that I will be representing our state at the National FCCLA Leadership Conference in Orlando, Florida this coming July.

Mahalo for Celebrating Purple Up for Military Kids Day!

In honor of Month Of the Military Child, community members from across the state sported purple attire as a visible tribute to military children and youth across the nation.  An effort that was initiated last year by New Hampshire Operation: Military Kids (OMK), April 13th marked the first annual National OMK Purple Up! For Military Kids Day with every OMK state in participation.  Students, administrators, D.O.E. and University faculty,  youth programs, businesses and community organizations took part in this celebration of the strength, courage and sacrifices of our nation's young heroes.  Whether you dressed in purple, dawned a purple ribbon or simply took the time to approach and recognize a military child, thank you to all who made April 13th a success! For more information about OMK or to get involved, please visit www.operationmilitarykids.org.  If you have any Purple Up! pictures that you would like to share, please send to omk@ctahr.hawaii.edu or call 808.956.4125.

Alaska 4-H Visit

This past Prince Kuhio Day, Oahu County 4-Hers had the pleasure to meet with some kids from other clubs from Alaska! Six kids from two different clubs, along with their advisors, visited Hawaii for three days in March. In between touring the sites and soaking up the sun, Oahu 4Hers had the pleasure to meet up with them one day at the Pearl City Urban Garden Center and share our experiences. There were different fun activities the kids could do which included t-shirt painting, scrapbook making, and cloth flower making. Of course, it would not be complete if there was not a service project involved! Everyone got to help Uncle Steve weed in the garden. A hula teacher came out and taught both Hawaiian and Alaskan 4eHers a short dance. While it was their first time dancing hula, everyone did wonderful and mastered the dance in just an hour!

After a large lunch, the Alaska 4-Hers showed the Hawaii 4-H’ers some pictures of Alaska and what their club does. They were doing everything from riding ATVs and kayaking through the frigid waters, to teaching little kids how to ride horses. It seems that, while we are separated by a larger ocean, we all share the same spirit of personal intrigue and love to volunteer. (On a side note, the landscape was just beautiful!)

Thanks to the club members from the Warriors and Keyblade Bearers for coming and helping our Alaska friends feel the true "aloha" of Hawaii! It was a wonderful experience and hopefully everyone can stay in touch with their new friends!
