My extension program
includes an education and training program in soil nutrient management
for
a wide variety of audiences and an active applied research program
involving Hawaii farmers and ranchers. Education and training activities
include presentations and workshops for high school students, the
Statewide Master Gardner Program, farmers, Cooperative Extension

Objectives:
1) to provide extension agents training in soil fertility and
nutrient management for Hawaii's diverse soil conditions. 2)
Develop technical materials and tools that improve our extension
agents' ability to serve clients in the area of soil fertility.
My
applied research program is conducted in partnership with a wide
diversity of clients including cabbage and lettuce farmers on
the fertile soils of Waimea (Big Island) and Kula (Maui), sweet
corn producers on windward Oahu, taro farmers in Hanalei and
Kauai ranchers trying to improve forage quality on the highly
weathered and nutrient depleted soils of Olomau. By conducting
on-farm trials, our clients are more inclined to adopt new farming
strategies that enhance the health and productivity of their
soils.
