Hand washing is basic
to food safety, personal health, and disease prevention.
Most people--including
children and adults do not wash their hands as often or as well
as needed.
Germ
City: Clean Hands, Healthy People
is an educational project to enhance awareness and improve the effectiveness
of hand washing. This multi-state project is federally funded as part
of the National Integrated Food Safety Initiative.
The project goals are:
Enhance awareness
of the importance of hand washing
Improve effectiveness
and frequency of hand washing among children, youth, adults, senior
citizens, and at-risk groups rural and urban settings
Modify attitudes,
enhance personal motivation, and facilitate behavior change
Evaluate effectiveness
of the hand washing education program
Current partners include
Washington State University, West Virginia University, University
of Idaho and Alabama A & M University. Local collaborators include
health professionals, school teachers and staff, local agencies
and community organizations, and community volunteers.
