Agricultural Diagnostic Service Center (ADSC)

This website is under constrution.

February 20, 2024

Aloha,

This email contains important information about the operational levels for each of the Agricultural Diagnostic Service Center (ADSC) facilities and programs as a result of the relocation of the business and administrative offices, National Plant Diagnostic Network training and Komohana Research and Extension Center construction.

University of Hawai'i Seed Laboratory
The laboratory will not be able to receive faxed seed orders (808) 956-2593 until the FAX system that is tied to our Xerox workstation in the business office is relocated to our new office on Monday, February 26th. We apologize for the delay due to procurement issues. The laboratory is open and continue to offer seeds for sale.

University of Hawai'i at Manoa Plant Clinic
The clinic remains closed until further notice. We are currently in the early stages of the recruitment process to fill this full-time temporary position.

ADSC Komohana Diagnostic Laboratory
The laboratory is temporarily closed until further notice. The last day to submit samples is Tuesday, February 20, 2024. We apologize for the very short notice. Due to the diagnostician training at several National Plant Diagnostic Network workshops on the US mainland and Komohana Research and Extension Center construction, the laboratory will be closed until Friday, May 31, 2024. Dependent on the timely completion of the construction project, the laboratory is anticipated to reopen and accept plant disease and insect pest samples from all islands across the State on Monday, June 3, 2024.

During the closure of the laboratory, plant disease and identification services can be obtained through the University of Florida (UF), Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS). Information about sample submission to UF Extension Plant Diagnostic Clinic can be found through the links below:

The UF lab preference is for customers to use 2-3 day shipping to Florida from Hawaii. Any postal service provider is ok, usually samples arrive at the end of business day and will be looked at the following morning. Double bag samples and do not use any damp paper towels in the samples. Cost is $60.00 for out of state samples for general disease diagnosis and $80 for molecular tests 5-7 business day turnaround time. Please contact the UF/IFAS laboratory before sending samples to obtain all necessary regulatory and permit documents for shipping samples between States.

ADSC Offices
Normal operations resumed the week of February 18, 2024. No walk-ins will be allowed until security issues are resolved. We are unable to scan, print, make copies and receive faxes until the Xerox Workstation is delivered on Monday, February 26th. Thank you for your understanding as we navigate these many changes and the disruptions to our operations as a result of our multiple moves and new hires.

We also thank you all for your continued support and patronage.

University of Hawai'i Seed Laboratory
The laboratory will not be able to receive faxed seed orders (808) 956-2593 until the FAX system that is tied to our Xerox workstation in the business office is relocated, set up, and running. We are currently coordinating the relocation of the workstation with Xerox. The laboratory will remain open and continue to offer seeds for sale.

The plant clinic will temporarily close in March due to Diagnostician Training on the mainland from March 1st – 18th and will close again sometime in April due to building construction. The date of reopening of the laboratory will depend on the completion of the construction project. We are hopeful that the new hire at the Plant Clinic may be able to take samples during this time, however, this is to be determined.

PLEASE NOTE: All samples must be shipped from Extension Offices to the Komohana Laboratory as specified in the Hawaii Department of Agriculture permit conditions. There are NO exceptions allowed by law.

Aloha and Happy New Year!

The Agricultural Diagnostic Service Center (ADSC) will continue to undergo significant changes in 2024. This email contains important information about our operational levels for each of our facilities and programs.

Before getting into the ADSC operations, I would like to recognize and congratulate Mr. Desmond Ogata, who retired from the ADSC after 38 plus years of service! His dedication and service to the State of Hawai'i's agricultural community is widely recognized by growers through Federal and State agencies. He single-handedly managed the University of Hawaii Seed Laboratory and the UH Manoa ADSC Plant Clinic without complaint and carried himself with the professionalism we all should strive to achieve. Thank you very much Desmond for all that you did for us professionally and personally. We are going to miss you!

University of Hawai'i Seed Laboratory
Basic daily operations will continue with Ms. Quynn Cytryn managing this operation as a casual hire along with student employees. Active recruitment to fill the temporary full-time position has been ongoing since July 2023. Seed availability continues to remain limited, and we are seeking creative ways to produce more seed supply.
