CTAHR's 17th Annual Awards Banquet
ABOUT AWARDS BANQUET
Andrew Hashimoto

Diversifying Hawaii's economy, ensuring a sustainable environment, and strengthening our communities: these goals reflect the core vision of The College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR).

We share this vision at our annual Awards Banquet. This year's theme: Growing Together: A Celebration of Learning and Community , builds on the stories featured in CTAHR's 2004 Impact Report which illustrate the how CTAHR is working with many partners to promote a diverse economy, a healthy environment, and strong communities.

As we look back on 2004, we recognize the excellence and accomplishments of our students, faculty, and staff, honor an outstanding alumnus who has made important contributions to a field or discipline represented by CTAHR, and pay homage to an exceptional individual from the community whose commitment to the college has greatly furthered CTAHR's goals.

This year we honor Dr. Kenneth Otagaki as our Outstanding Alumnus. Dr. Otagaki worked for decades to expand Hawaii's crop base at a time when few recognized the importance of agricultural diversification. His enduring commitment to farming honors his alma mater, and his long, exemplary life is a testimony to the value of hard work and perseverance in the face of tremendous challenges.

The 2005 Ka Lei Hano Heritage Award will be presented to the Family and Community Education program and their tireless volunteers for their dedication to strengthening the community through projects and activities that educate, assist, and enrich our families and communities.

2004 was undoubtedly a memorable year for CTAHR. With the flood in October affecting seven out of the college's eight buildings and damages to buildings and project-related equipment and supplies in the millions of dollars, despite its high costs, the flood reminds us of what really matters. We are grateful that no lives were lost, and we are proud of how members of the college have worked tirelessly together to fix what has been broken and save what can be salvaged. The students, staff, and faculty of CTAHR have met this challenge with dedication and teamwork. And as we move forward from the flood, the past year's accomplishments give us reason to celebrate.

I invite you to join me, the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources, and the CTAHR Alumni Association at our 17th annual Awards Banquet for an evening of fun and fellowship as we celebrate growing together.

Aloha,
