Welcome to Dr. Greg Bruland's Website!

I am an Assistant Professor in the Natural Resources and Environmental Management (NREM) Department at the University of Hawai'i Mānoa.

My research interests include soil and water conservation, watershed management, land-based threats to coastal ecosystems, and coastal and wetland ecology and management.  I am interested in finding ways to better manage tropical watersheds and to protect costal zones from the effects of agricultural activity, urbanization, and feral ungulate activity.  The objectives common to all research projects are to: (1) enhance our knowledge and understanding of the resilience and fragility of ecosystems to human activity, and (2) identify effective environmental solutions utilizing the most current and innovate techniques.  I believe that the best environmental solutions will be found through using integrated, temporally and spatially-explicit research which takes advantage of the latest developments in global positioning systems (GPS), geographic information systems (GIS), geostatistics, and VNIR diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS).  These technologies allow for research over larger scales and with greater resolution than has been previously possible.  Thus, they will help us characterize the status and degradation of soil and water quality at the watershed scale, while also giving growers, landowners, managers, environmental economists, and scientists powerful methods to identify critical source areas of nutrient, pesticide, and sediment loss as well as optimal sites for best management practice implementation, remediation, and restoration.  My approach to meeting these objectives involves (1) designing and conducting targeted and thorough field work; (2) working at a variety of scales from micro-scale spectroscopy of soil cores to macro-scale mapping and monitoring of watersheds and landscapes; (3) utilizing advanced statistical and geostatistical techniques; and (4) developing improved management techniques.
