  Hydrated Lime

On April 26, 2005, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) granted a Section 18 Quarantine Exemption permit that allowed use of hydrated lime to control coqui frogs in Hawai‘i for a trial period of 3 years.  The permit has recently lapsed; however, HI Department of Agriculture is working to renew the permit, and EPA is currently reviewing data collected by various agencies in Hawai‘i before processing the renewal.  In the meantime, as of April 26, 2008 until EPA renews the exemption, it is illegal to use hydrated lime to control coqui frogs in Hawai‘i.  It is not illegal to purchase hydrated lime nor is it illegal to continue to use hydrated lime as a soil amendment for pH adjustment.
