Dr. Wally Mitchell (1920–1996) completed this article in 1994. A shortened version of it was included in Malamalama: A History of the University of Hawaii, edited by Robert M. Kamins and Robert E. Potter, published by the University of Hawaii Press. Much has changed in the structure of the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR) since 1994. Not all of the statements made in the article about the current organization of CTAHR are still accurate. For example, the Hawaii Institute of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources has been disbanded as an administrative entity within CTAHR, and the college has been reorganized from eleven into six departments.
