In keeping with UH Manoa’s and CTAHR’s goal of providing students with a global perspective, the college has been seeking ways for CTAHR students to gain international experiences and to bring foreign students to UH Manoa to share their experiences with our students and faculty. This summer, in partnership with UH’s Outreach College, CTAHR offered a three-week English Language, American Culture, and Technical Experiential Learning summer program at UHM for students from the National Pingtung University of Science and Technology (NPUST) of Taiwan.

Under the summer program, initiated by CTAHR's 2006 Alumnus of the Year, Dr. Po-Yung Lai, Vice President for Academic Affairs of NPUST, undergraduate and graduate students from across the NPUST campus received training in the morning from UHM's Special English Program, aimed at strengthening their English language skills and exposing them to American and local (Hawaii) culture. To provide a balanced international experience, CTAHR organized and carried-out afternoon activities, including class lectures and hands-on activities in technical and cultural topics, and field trips to local points of interest. Modest amounts of funds from the summer program are being provided to the programs of CTAHR faculty members and student groups that contributed to the summer offering (mahalo to all CTAHR faculty and students who assisted in offering the lectures and conducting the field trips).

The unqualified success of this pilot program will form the basis for other training programs to be offered in the future.
