Ka Hana Po'okela Award
CTAHR is very pleased to announce that this year, the Ka Hana Po'okela Award is being awarded to three students, Mandy Anhalt, Michael Melzer, and Anthony Ortiz. The Ka Hana Po'okela Award was established in 1992 to recognize outstanding service by students in CTAHR organizations. Selection of awardees is made by a panel of student peers.
Mandy Anhalt, senior undergraduate student in PEPS, is a member of Ka Mea Kolo, the entomology student organization in CTAHR. Mandy has contributed significantly to Ka Mea Kolo's outreach efforts, participating in educational presentations and exhibits to the general public and helping to generate interest in CTAHR by potential students. Mandy has served as a role model to other undergraduate students in PEPS and has been instrumental in promoting Ka Mea Kolo's activities and engaging students in her field of study.
Michael Melzer, Ph.D. candidate in PEPS's Tropical Plant Pathology program, is a member of the Plant Pathology Graduate Student Organization (PPGSO). Michael has contributed significantly to PPGSO by serving in different officer positions in the organization and by coordinating many of its service activities. He has consistently shared his technical expertise in various outreach efforts, including guest lecturing at high schools, judging at the State Science and Engineering Fair, and providing assistance to local citrus growers.
Anthony Ortiz, M.S. candidate in PEPS's Tropical Plant Pathology program, is a member of the Plant Pathology Graduate Student Organization (PPGSO). Anthony presently serves as president of PPGSO and has been instrumental in improving the organization's communications and fund raising. He has been very active in PPGSO's and CTAHR's service and outreach efforts, participating in the college's open house and teaching plant pathology to visiting students, judging at science fairs, replanting watersheds with native plant species, and developing a garden for the Manoa campus.
Please join us in congratulating Mandy Anhalt, Michael Melzer, and Anthony Ortiz, for their outstanding service and for being the recipients of CTAHR's 2005 Ka Hana Po'okela Award.
