AN EXCELLENT TWO DAYS FOR CTAHR!
Yesterday's college-wide conference and today's Cooperative Extension workshop were, I'm convinced, watershed days for CTAHR. We went a long way toward building the shared vision of the college conference theme. More than half the entire CTAHR faculty and staff attended the college-wide conference and over 100 attended the CES workshop. Thanks to all of you who took time out of your busy schedules to come together for days that were inspiring and challenging.
There are not enough words to thank Donna Ching and the members of her committee, who worked so hard to organize the college-wide conference that literally had something for everyone. No detail was overlooked. The committee members were:
Barry Brennan
Stephanie Cadelinia
Cathy Chan-Halbrendt
Allene Chun
Arlene Garcia
Miles Hakoda
Elsie Kawahara
Joanne Kurosawa
Rachel Novotny
Kelvin Sewake
Paul Singleton
Keith Suyat-Terauchi
Dale Uno
Deborah Ward
Gloria Wong
Robin Shimabuku and Halina Zaleski also helped with the CES workshop.
Thanks to associate deans Cathy Chan-Halbrendt, Barry Brennan, and Marlene Hapai for their speeches on research, extension, and instruction, which so ably set the tone for the day.
Thanks to all who participated in all the breakout sessions. Within our groups, we identified roadblocks to achieving our vision, but more important, we identified many ways to overcome those roadblocks.
The most important lesson of these two days was that we can achieve our vision and the greatness I know can be ours only if we share a commitment and work together. With commitment and teamwork, nothing can stop us.
Im already looking forward to next year's conference.
CALL FOR BRIEFING PAPERS FOR CANDIDATES
In response to requests I have received from candidates for various offices, we need to prepare briefing papers on four major areas of concern to CTAHR: agriculture; forestry; children and families; and food, nutrition, and health. Focus of the papers will be forward looking and on the agenda for development of these areas over the next few years. Candidates may use these documents as resource material for their campaigns and to shape their positions. It is an ideal opportunity for us to help frame the public discussion of these issues and, perhaps, to have input into the future policy decisions.
We will begin by writing two to three page briefing papers. It is possible that they will be expanded into more complete white papers as the campaigns unfold over the summer. The papers will be available to any candidates who request them.
The following individuals have agreed to coordinate preparation of these papers: agriculture: C.N. Lee (956-4882, chinl@hawaii.edu); forestry: Samir El-Swaify (956-8708, elswaify@hawaii.edu); children and families: Sylvia Yuen; food, nutrition, and health: Rachel Novotny (956-3848, novotny@hawaii.edu). The papers on agriculture and forestry will be due within two weeks (May 24). Those on children and families and on food, nutrition, and health will be due in three weeks (May 31).
I am asking you to volunteer your time to determine the content of the briefing papers and to help in writing them. Please contact the appropriate coordinator early the week of May 13 so that work can begin as soon as possible.
UPDATE ON COUNTY ADMINISTRATORS
As you know, UH is in the midst of a hiring freeze. We have requested an exemption from the freeze to hire county administrators for Maui and Hawaii Counties. A name for each of those counties has been sent forward to the UH-Manoa chancellor's office. As soon as we learn that they have been approved, we will make a formal announcement.
The searches for county administrators for Kauai and Oahu are ongoing.
CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR GRADUATES
Graduation day is May 19. I want to send my personal congratulations to all CTAHR's graduates and to the faculty members who have mentored them through their college careers. I have said it several times recently, but it bears repeating often: our students are our primary product. We will be as strong in the future as they make us.
DEAN'S NOTES ON A SUMMER SCHEDULE
This is the final edition of Dean's Notes for the academic year. Beginning with this edition and continuing to the start of classes in August, Dean's Notes will appear every third Friday rather than every other Friday. Please keep this in mind if you have items to submit for the CTAHR calendar.
FCS ANNOUNCES ANOTHER COSTUME EXHIBIT
The following was sent in by Linda Arthur:
Growing up in the 1950s here in Hawaii was a unique experience that we've tried to capture in our new exhibit, Small Kid Time: Hanabutta Days. As a collaborative project between Family Resources and Apparel Product Design and Merchandising majors, this exhibit focuses on the lived experience of some of our colleagues. Through interviews that form the basis for the text in the exhibit panels, and exhibition of 1950s clothing worn by kids and their moms here in Hawaii, this exhibit tries to capture the essence of what is locally referred to as Small Kid Time. Please come visit the exhibit in the Costume Gallery (Miller 112); it is open from 11:30 to 1:30 daily, 12-4 Sundays. The exhibit runs from now through May 19. For further information please call Linda Arthur at 956-2234.
