CTAHR NAMED SPECIFICALLY IN LINGLES VISION
Governor-elect Linda Lingle mentions CTAHR by name in her vision document, "A New Beginning." Specifically, she says, "The UH College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources must be adequately funded to study export products, markets, disease prevention, and processing techniques . . . Hawaii can, and should, be a world leader in agricultural science." These comments are included in a section in which she acknowledges that agriculture is a vital part of the states economy.
I have had encouraging conversations with Ms. Lingle. I believe she recognizes the importance of agriculture for Hawaii and wants to help agriculture grow. We can all look forward to working cordially and constructively with her administration to further agricultures and CTAHRs interests during the course of her tenure in office.

CHANCELLOR ENGLERT TO VISIT CTAHR
Please mark your calendars for November 26, 3:30, to attend a reception for UH-Manoa Chancellor Peter Englert. Dr. Englert will speak first to department chairs following the monthly leadership committee meeting in Gilmore 212. He will then go to Ag Sciences III, conference room 219, for the college-wide reception to which you are all invited. Plan to attend if time allows.

100 PLANNING TO ATTEND TAILGATE PARTY
I hope you signed up for the tailgate party (Urban Garden Center, Saturday, November 23, 2:30-5:30 p.m.) by last Fridays deadline. Reservations are now closed. Were expecting a crowd of 100. Of those, 52 are planning to go to the UH/University of Cincinnati football game. The party is being held following a regular meeting of the CTAHR board of advisors earlier that day also at UGC. It will be a great way to relax and meet alumni and members of the board.
Hope to see you for what promises to be a fun day.

REMINDER: ASPB ANNUAL MEETING HERE IN JULY
It is not too early for many of you to begin thinking seriously about submitting abstracts for the annual meeting of the American Society of Plant Biologists (formerly the American Society of Plant Physiologists), publishers of Plant Physiology and The Plant Cell. ASPB will meet here in Honolulu July 26-30, 2003. The call for abstracts has been posted and can be viewed at http://www.aspb.org/meetings/pb-2003/abstractcall.cfm. To submit an abstract, at least one author must be a member of ASPB. Deadline for submission is February 28, 2003.
This is an excellent opportunity to bring your research to the attention of plant biologists from all over the world, but especially from the Pacific Rim region. ASPB anticipates large contingents from Japan, Australia, Taiwan, Korea, and China, with smaller attendance from India and New Zealand. Total attendance is expected to be over 2000, which will make it one of the societys largest annual meetings ever.
Robert Paull, David Christopher, and Jody Moore attended a meeting recently with ASPB organizers, who came to Hawaii for some preliminary planning. If you have any questions about the meeting or the society, check the societys web site or contact Robert (paull@hawaii.edu) or David (dchr@hawaii.edu) or Jody (moorej@ctahr.hawaii.edu).

CTAHR ALUM HONORED IN TENNESSEE
Kathryn Chandley Gemmer, who received her B.S. and M.S. in animal science in 1985 and 1988 from CTAHR, was recently named recipient of the Tennessee Academy of Science Distinguished Science Teaching Award for 2002. The award is made annually by the Tennessee Academy of Science to one science teacher in the state who has made significant contributions to science teaching and learning. This is neither the first time nor the first state in which Ms. Gemmer has been recognized for her teaching. In 1994-1995, she was Western Carolina Middle School Teacher of the Year, and in 1995-1996, she was Western Carolina Creative Teacher of the Year.
My congratulations to Ms. Gemmer and to Charlie Weems, Ms. Gemmerss advisor, and the other faculty members in animal sciences who taught her so well. Its good to hear that CTAHR graduates are having an impact.

ADMINISTRATORS RECEIVE RENEWAL LETTERS
All individuals in the UH system holding executive and managerial positions (including CTAHRs five, dean--Hashimoto, three associate deans--Brennan, Chan-Halbrendt, and Hapai, and director of administrative services--Wong) have received notification from President Dobelle that their contracts are renewed. As you may or may not have known, everyone in the UH system who held a executive or management position received notification last December that their positions were under review and would be subject to termination within a year pending the results of that review. That review has been completed, and those continuing in their positions have been informed.
