WELCOME BACK!
By today, I hope that everyone is settling into the new academic year. Welcome back to all of you, faculty and students. We have many new faculty members on board. It’s good to have all of you here. To our new and returning students, aloha! I have said many times, and it bears repeating over and over: CTAHR is as strong as its students and graduates make it. Thank you for being here. May your year be one of discovery and challenge and good times.

As a way for all of us to get acquainted, mark your calendars for the annual Welcome Back Ice Cream Bash in Sherman Courtyard, 12:30-1:30, Monday, September 16. All the ice cream you can eat for as long as it holds out. See you there!

CTAHR LEADS THE WAY IN MERITORIOUS TEACHING
Three CTAHR faculty members will be among those honored at the 2002 convocation to be held Monday, September 9, 10:00 a.m., at Kennedy Theatre. The three, Wayne Iwaoka (Department of Human Nutrition, Food and Animal Sciences), Sylvia Yuen (Center on the Family), and Michael Cheang (lecturer in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences) will be presented with the Chancellor’s Meritorious Award for Teaching. Once again, CTAHR has dominated the awards scene. Of the six UH-Manoa teaching awards to be made at the convocation, three are to faculty with CTAHR ties. Congratulations to all three.

THIRD ROUND OF PRIORITY STAFFING COMING SOON
I will be sending a call soon for the third round of priority staffing. Units should be thinking about their faculty staffing needs. We’re not certain yet how many positions we will be able to fill, but it is good to keep the hiring momentum moving forward.

BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT PARTNERSHIP MEETING NEXT WEEK
This is a reminder to those of you who have registered for the Business Development Partnership organizational meeting that’s scheduled for next Thursday, September 5. The meeting is planned for the Campus Center Ballroom. It will be a full agenda, beginning at 8:00 a.m. and ending at around 7:30 p.m. Continental breakfast, lunch, and a light dinner will be provided.

The tentative agenda is as follows:
8:00 Registration and continental breakfast
8:30 Introductions and expectations for the meeting
8:45 Rationale for the initiative
9:15 Perspectives from CTAHR Board of Advisors
9:45 Break
10:00 Strategic issues and goals
12:00 Lunch
1:00 Structural and organizational issues and goals
3:00 Break
3:15 Action planning
4:30 Evaluation

This is an exciting opportunity to be involved in building the framework of a program that will set a new agenda and direction for CTAHR. I hope that as many of you as possible will participate.

MBBE HIGH SCHOOL INTERN WINS NIH HONOR
Aaron Wong, a 2002 Maryknoll High School graduate, who spent the summer as an intern working on MBBE’s bioremediation project underway in the Ala Wai Canal, won an award from NIH for his efforts. Aaron was among five Hawaii high school grads selected by NIH to participate in the NIH/Drew Summer High School Student Research Symposium. Aaron was paid a stipend for his summer work and earned a trip to Washington, DC, where he competed with other students from around the country by making both oral and poster presentations of the bioremediation work he did under the supervision of MBBE’s Renee Harada and Traci Sylva. Aaron’s award was for excellence in a research presentation. MBBE chair Charly Kinoshita was so impressed with Aaron’s work that he used it recently to make a presentation to the Office of Naval Research in search of funding to continue the Ala Wai Canal work. Aaron has now gone on to begin his freshman year at the University of Southern California. Congratulations not only to him but also to the MBBE faculty who clearly provided him a challenging and stimulating summer intern experience.

HONORS IN TPSS
Robert Paull, chair of the Department of Tropical Plant and Soil Sciences, in his regular department newsletter mentioned several honors awarded to TPSS faculty, students, and alumni. Richard Criley, horticulturist, will be presented with the Society of American Florists’ 2002 Alex Laurie Award for Research and Education at the Society’s annual meeting in late September. Horticulturist and geneticist James Brewbaker was honored by the Australian Center for International Research for his pioneering work on the use of his Leucaena hybrid KX2 in Vietnam’s rural communities. Graduate student Yoonsup So, who works with Jim Brewbaker, received a third place award for his presentation at the Western Society of Crop Science meeting. And, last but not least, TPSS alum Charles Clements won a National Order for Scientific Merit from the government of Brazil. Congratulations to all!

NATIONAL 4-H CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION
Carol Ikeda sent this:

The national 4-H program is celebrating its 100th anniversary. Everyone is invited to a celebration to be held Sunday, October 13, 2:00-5:00 p.m., in the UH-Manoa Art Department auditorium. The program will be hosted by Larry Price, 4-H alumni. Join us as we recognize 4-H alumni across the state through our "Hall of Fame"; share exhibits and pictures of 4-H'ers and the 4-H program from the past; and submit the "World's Heaviest Lei" into the Guinness Book of World Records! (Garfield has been our official 4-H mascot for the centennial celebration, and we have made a coin lei for him.) For further information, contact Carol Ikeda at cikeda@hawaii.edu or 808-322-4892.
