The East-West Center Association, which represents 46,000 professionals throughout Asia, the Pacific, and the United States, is organizing its biennial International Conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from July 1 to July 4, 2002. This conference is also co-sponsored by the Tourist Development Corporation of Malaysia, The East-West Center and the Malaysian Chapter of the International Association of East-West Center Alumni.
The conference theme is Globalization, a free market concept that calls for a borderless world. Globalization is the subject of heated debate and various interpretations. Some say it is unstoppable, inevitable and a blessing for all mankind. Others say that globalization is a new form of colonization by the developed nations over the less developed and smaller nations. While members of the World Trade Organization are trying to negotiate for the best trade terms for themselves, the impact of globalization goes beyond business, trade and finance. In fact it will affect practically every aspect of our lives. Some of those effects may be positive, while others may be negative.
Can the Asia-Pacific nations prepare themselves to minimize the negative effects and maximize the positive advantages? Strategically located in the heart of the Asia-Pacific Basin, Malaysia is the ideal place to reach out to one another and seek answers to that question.
For Malaysians who have participated in the East-West Center programs, this is the best opportunity to catch up with old friends, make new professional contacts and at the same time update your knowledge on international and regional development.
