James Leary, a graduate student in Dulal Borthakur’s lab (MBBE), has identified nitrogen-fixing nodules on the branches of koa trees. Like many members of the bean family, koa is known to form mutually beneficial relationships with soil bacteria, providing food (carbon) and places to live (nodules) in exchange for nitrogen that the bacteria can harvest from air. Leary is the first to report that this symbiotic relationship is sometimes established above ground, in pockets of rotting wood or debris associated with branches. His results, presented at the 4th International Symbiosis Society Congress, were featured in the prestigious journal Science [Pennisi, E. Fixers in the Sky. Science 301:1467 (September 12, 2003)]
