Visiting UH scholar Na Young Hong of Ewha Womans University (Seoul, Korea) is the guest curator of a featured exhibit at the Honolulu Academy of Arts.

From FlatFabrics to Contoured Body Form: A Story of Asian Costumes" focuses on characteristics and variations in traditional Asian costume that show the evolution of costume construction from India to Japan. The exhibit will be on display through January 16, 2005.

The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences FamR Undergraduate Student Interns were honored for their volunteer contributions to the HUGS (Help Understanding and Group Support for seriously ill children and their families) organization.

CTAHR’s Dean Andrew Hashimoto accepted the Allii Awards on behalf of the FamR program. The HUGS organization has hosted many FamR interns and currently seeks FamR undergraduate intern volunteers. See the website for additional pictures http://www.aliiawards.com/

CTAHR’s 16th Annual Awards Banquet “Gaining Ground: Past Accomplishments, Future Promise” was held at the Hilton Hawaiian Village on April 14, 2003. Three Department of Family and Consumer Sciences faculty, undergraduate student, and alumni were honored.

Carol Ikeda was honored with the 2004 Excellence in Extension Award to a County Agent for Outstanding Performance and Results in a Nutrition or Human Resources Program. Carol also received a plaque in recognition for her outstanding 4-H contributions to the state of Hawaii by the Hawaii House of Representatives.

Allene Chun (FamR Alumni) was honored as the 2004 Dean’s Award for Outstanding Service by an Administrative, Professional, and Technical Employee. Allene works in the CTAHR Office of Academic Affairs.

Paige Honjo (FamR undergraduate student) was honored as the CTAHR Best Undergraduate Oral Presentation at the 2004 Research Symposium, April 3, 2004 (mentored by Dr. Su Yeong Kim) for their research methodology class project entitled “ Road rage and number of accidents in males and females”. Paige made the oral presentation for which she won the award, but Atsuko Fujiwara and Sheryl Miyagawa were other undergraduate research team members who collaborated on this project.

Who says you need to be in New York, Paris or London to see the freshest faces in fashion? Young designers in the University of Hawaii's Apparel Product Design and Merchandising Program are...


The Read to Me program from 4-H was featured in the Honolulu Advertiser on April 12, 2004.

Claire Nakasuka, FCS Oahu County agent, coordinates this successful program. The Read to Me program involves 400 teens who have read to about 10,000 Hawaii youngsters. This program is being adopted by the Manchester High School West in New Hampshire and is currently looking to expand to other youth groups in Hawaii.


Laura Sato Farrington High School teacher, former FAMR major, featured in the Honolulu Advertiser (April 4, 2004).



Apparel Product Design and Merchandising students competed in the Les Fleurs Couture decoration contest which was held on April 3, 2004 at Kahala Mall.




Friends of the Family club members volunteered at the Germ City booth, a 4-H activity, at the Ward Warehouse for the Health, Nutrition and Fitness Fair on March 21,2004.
