CTAHR College-Wide Conference: Building A Shared Vision
Extension Workshop–May 10, 2002

Funding

Ideas summarized by total group:

  1. Research driven by national needs and funding and less by extension funding
  2. Getting new ideas into commercialization

Committee Members:
Ideas brainstormed:
  1. RCUH revolving accounts
  2. Partner with non-profit organizations
  3. Partner with for-profit organizations
  4. Proactive guidelines and support for new PIs – (handling funds complex, fiscal and personnel)
  5. Too much hassle for handling small amounts of money
  6. Full-time grant writer - alternative
  7. Mechanism to facilitate funding of new good ideas and continuation of successful projects
  8. Operation and maintenance of extension projects
  9. Mentorship
  10. When successful at getting a large grant, how do you maintain pre-existing responsibilities?

Solutions proposed:
  1. Extension Funding Guidelines Handbook. May be web-based, includes fiscal, FTE allocations, personnel forms, resource list for assistance, what types of funding available.
  2. Research grants differ from extension grants
  3. Grants are very specific. What works with one grant will not apply to another grant.
  4. Contact Ruddy Wong for staff and responsibility list from CTAHR business office, e..g. who to contact
  5. Many experts in the college (ask for show of hands)

Action Plan:
  1. Committee “E” to come up with list of “generalized questions” to survey Extension staff on obstacles, who to contact, what they would like to have had before they starting the proposal/grant writing and other topics TBA. Most members of the committee agreed that each proposal will differ from one to another, and one set of guidelines will not cover all the bases. (2 month)
  2. Contact Dr. Barry Brennan for list of staff with Extension percentage.
  3. The responses received from item 1 above will be summarized by topics by Committee “E”. Survey tool to be sent out to CTAHR business office, UH Foundation, RCUH and others to ask what services that they can provide. (2 months)
  4. Committee “E” to review responses from item 2 above and consolidate. (2 months)
  5. Committee “E” to draft “handbook guidelines” (3 months)
    Handbook (May 2003)
