Had heard pieces but not whole thing.
Seeing all personnel in one location is helpful.
"Being a recent hire, I truly am blessed to attend & understand CTAHR's goal/problems."
Basically we need to do everything we're doing & more but more smartly.
Formal presentations are not the Dean's best skill but the vision is good and strong.
"Very good direction, but curious & hopeful it works out for the long haul."
This is the first time I heard the Dean present his view after being on staff for one year.
Have a better understanding of where people prefer for it to go.
At least some people's ideas of D & F.
No clear direction by the Dean.

"For me, the budget graph plus my dept were significant."
I am dispensable.
I have high expectations that some day research extension & clientele will be able to work together & solve problem instead of creating them.
Need more training clerical w/ PI & clerical for more support.
But still need to strive for higher pay & reclassifying.
Cooperate - cooperate - cooperate.
"Without direction in (1) above, this aspect is difficult."

It is always nice to talk to colleagues. Usually no time.
Tried to meet different people from different units
Did not take advantage of this opportunity.
Sharing on different topics a positive move.
We are working with them already. Conf provided opportunity to meet new staff.
It gave us a chance to renew acquaintances but networking isn't what happening-there are so few NEW people.
Time element limited networking.
I got to meet people w/ similar interests.

I tend to be quiet.
Thank you!
Small group discussion provide the opportunity plus writing questions on card.
Opportunity-yes. But too many groups-couldn't participate effectively in more than 1.

Topic groups brought together different groups.
Because there was not a cross-section (I.e. only extension people showed up). It was the chair preaching to the chair.
"Even though networking was minimal, the chance to reconnect was important."
"Yes, as small groups but I don't feel it translates to CTAHR as a whole because of the diverse opinions and egos."
|

Did not take advantage of the opportunity. Not comfortable with confrontation at this point.
"For me, this is true, but I'm not sure what the strategy was to achieve this."
I do this on a daily basis.
I have always had a commitment to CTAHR & clients.
|
8. Tell us something new you learned or really liked about the conference.
"This format of having the entire college together was great! Leadership, support staff & faculty & hearing the vision of the" dean & his associates.
"The issues or problems all seem to be people related. As I teach, there is not much that I can do apart from being positive" and helpful.
Seeing the bigger picture. I was not as aware even as dept chair.
I got a chance to meet people that I usually only talk on the phone with in person.
Derek Kurisu. 3 associate deans. Our leaders are committed to CTAHR and its achievements. Thank you for lunch.
Lots of work to do and need to search for other resources other than govt.
What I liked about the conference is that CTAHR is trying to get more funding to fund more research programs.
Also trying to provide incentives to college grads who want to start their own business in agribusiness.
I found our leaders to be passionate about their position at CTAHR. Sincerely hope they can move forward.
Progress about new departments.
It was great to have everyone together-not only learning but bonding socially-and that's important. It was nice to invite those on the neighbor islands.
I got to meet the people I work w/ over the phone. I understand the problems that come w/ a college this size & why problems is difficult to solve unless there is input from the people who need to be heard from.
Ordinary people doing extraordinary things! Derek was great!
Really enjoyed Derek Kurisu's talk!
Need less for deanlets--didn't really make a difference.
Something of the depth of issues facing the college. I think participants really appreciated the opportunity to meet.
Better understanding on the different funding components in the UH system. Learned how some PI's are responsible & some are not w/ fiscal matters. It was nice to meet the people w/ names.
I liked the effort to get people to get together to brainstorm.
College's overall budget on the general sense that we want to work as a group (cohesive).
Networking-chance to connect with other CTAHR people.
We got heard what others have to say in our afternoon session. Realized we have the same goals & concerns even though we have different titles & responsibilities.
Openness and opportunity to share view. Excellent participation in morning session (shame on those who left)
Networking with colleagues
Speaker Derek
"If no one takes NEXT STEP, day will not have meant much. Surely ideas were raised that could make a difference."
Thanks for including everyone! Do it again.
Met some very good ag techs. Learned Andy's vision of his role.
Like having all types of staff present - a first.
Line of communication.
The interaction with other peers.
Cathy Cavaletto's suggestion for a motto: 'Perpetuate the Life of the Land and its People'. Let's really build on that!
Reaffirmation of priorities & vision.
Derek Kurisu was a great speaker. This conference was a good start-however I don't feel I have a full understanding of the college's direction & focus.
Hearing from each assoc dean as well as the dean. Derek Kurisu added a great change of pace.
That the college really wants to improve things! And that is a good thing to do!
Well planned and well run.
Chance to talk frankly about issues across depts. Well organized.
Basic openness in communications.
"If everyone doesn't take responsibility for moving the college forward, it won't happen."
Opportunity to get together & see how many people/resources there actually are.
Industry analyses. I like to be a member of CTAHR ohana.
I liked the opportunity to directly question the dean and associate deans (I.e. they were accessible & this encourages continued future communication).
Opportunity to discuss issues of concern
This was a time I could voice my opinion w/out hesitation. It was a very good conf--I'm glad Dr. Chan-Halbrendt encouraged our attendance.
What the other depts are in CTAHR & their functions/visions & the need for more info/communication.
"Small issues group--excellent, was given the opportunity to voice concerns. Good format a.m. Where the 3 assoc deans "
shared & question & answer format. Derek Kurisu is an exciting and motivating speaker.
We actually included staff & secretaries in the conference. Not just faculty. The dean answered a few questions.
Great format.
"Chance to identify needs, brainstorm, give possible solutions."
I felt the speeches by the dean and directors were valuable. I hope the outcomes from the work groups are measured.
The conference was well organized & beneficial. Good job!
Opportunity to talk about issues that concern me with like-minded people (afternoon session).
Good time to meet w/ outer island personnel.
"Derek Kurisu's talk. Dean & assoc deans' presentations, time for networking."
The time was well paced; the day went very fast; good time management. I think the time was well organized in that this was the first time to do this with our new administration-the next one needs to be more focused.
Seeing higher-ups concerned also of lower levels concerns.
# of alumni who work for the college.
A very good opportunity to meet new colleagues. Good idea of networking.
Opportunity to meet many talented people in one setting-didn't realize their existence before.
"It was good to see the Dean and hear him speak. I disagree that his role is for external relationships only, and letting the" Asst Deans handle internal affairs. He does need to interact somewhat with people he's representing to build trust for each other.
Able to match faces to the names on emails. Derek Kurisu's speech. Very motivating & uplifting.
I have gained a better understanding of issues facing the college & other faculty members' perspectives & perceptions on addressing those issues.
Opportunity to meet people & share.
"Organized, well planned, talks were well very well."
New faces and people committed to CTAHR.
"This time they involved the 'support staff', where we could voice our opinions; hopefully, we will see results when there is a " follow up on the issues that were brought up.
|
9. Tell us one thing you would change about the conference.
"No, Donna and her team did a tremendous task!"
Location. Too dark and crowded. Stage too high.
Administrators would have done better with experience of about a hundred presentations.
Better organization re breakout groups could've been more efficient.
Croissants for breakfast; accommodations for overnight?
"There is no 'good' time. However, with so many papers to grade at the end of the semester, I felt pressured to attend and ambivalent because of workload.
Narrow the number of themes.
"I don't know, but I have a comment. When the individual small groups gave their reports, I felt like it was, just a bunch of words & rhetoric. I didn't get the feeling that something was going to be done with these recommendations. Maybe I'm wrong. I hope I am. To the conference committee-'great effort!' I can't imagine how hard you must have worked!
Try to make it mandatory for everyone even if it means 'closing shop'!
More dialog w/ administrators.
Make the pupu hour earlier for neighbor island personnel.
Work on few burning issues--ahead of time--more participation by more people or fewer issues--say top 2 or 3 issues.
Would like to see followup on issues.
Expand opportunities to discuss ideas and suggestions.
We would like to be able to evaluate our superiors-'bosses' so they can see how they can improve to help others too.
Need time to interact with new people.
"Require attendance of more key people (business office, dept chairs, other heads)."
A staff development of the college.
Review of presentations before conference (previous thought would allow more questions). Nobody talked about measures of scholarships (only publications came up as primary measures).
Sitting arrangements & setup.
Could move a little faster. Cards were not effective-try something different.
Have it more often.
Actions not specific enough.
Change location from year to year.
Not to hold it when teaching faculty have multiple end-of-semester tasks to do.
Questions to dean and associate deans should be selected (screened).
1 day rather than 2 days.
"Off hand, can't think of a thing."
Add one current college success story.
"Need to invite more external people. Legislators, dept of agriculture, etc. What's the dean & pres. priorities?"
You probably already know-better coordination between morning speaker and power point slide presentation.
Too many 'presentations' in a.m. session.
Nothing I can think about.
More than one day conference or have conference more often.
Longer breaks to network.
"Include more clientele in the process, students, producers, consumers."
More time for Q & A's.
Really need to follow up with ideas.
More time for afternoon session.
Eliminate small group discussion.
Better power point preparations for presentations.
Opportunity to identify critical issues before conf; prob would get more responses & would save time.
Focus more-the first time was great-next time focus on specific issues.
Let Dennis Holton speak about what he's observed at UH CTAHR.
Better use of lunch time to discuss issues.
One day is too short to cover what needs were discussed-rushed for time.
Rotate islands for future conferences.
Info on different projects/research happening in college. Speaker sessions held in room w/ tables for writing.
Make it a 2 day conference when we can do poster and oral presentations to find out what other faculty are doing.
Q&A should be done after the administrators' talks are finished.
The workshop arrangements; there were a lot of noise coming from the Campus Center staff and it was hard to hear the speakers. It was very disturbing.
|
10. When we have another college conference, would you like to be involved in planning it. If so, give us your name here."
I wish I had the time to commit. :(
No. No time.
No
"Yes, if I am still here."
I don't know yet.
"At a minimum, there needs to be a conference of this nature every other year."
I'll think about it (was already involved).
I hope but I am learning from you folks.
No
Yes. Richard Ebesu.
Jan McEwen.
No thank you.
I will volunteer the next time.
Kathy Lu
What about a workshop for the clerical support staff?
|
Extra Comments
Thank you for putting this together! Great job!
Now it is the implementation part!!
Fiscal session w/ Keith: This is my first college-wide conf and brainstorming of our problems and possible solutions in our small group was very beneficial to me. We know that someone will be looking (at) our suggestions seriously. Change must be made & I'm happy to help follow through with the solutions.
A conference every 5-10 years just doesn't do it! The next conference should be next year or at worse 2 years.
I was very impressed with the conference & all the work that went into it. I'd love to help with the next one.
A few good effort considering all chaos. Thanks for moving it to accommodate instructional faculty.
