The Need for Leadership

Agriculture continues to be one of the largest industries in Hawaii. Yet, industry transformation must take place to meet rapidly changing technological and global demands. A diversified agricultural industry is evolving and it is closely linked to the development of sustainable rural communities. Today’s agricultural and rural community entrepreneurs have a unique opportunity to address our State’s need for a healthy balance between our food supply, the environment and a strong economy.

The people involved in Hawaii’s agricultural industry and rural communities are dedicated and highly productive. Independent farmers and rural entrepreneurs have extremely varied backgrounds and form a diverse group with a wide range of interests. The lack of coordinated efforts to solve their common problems, the difficulty of achieving sustainability and the lack of opportunities to study and become articulate in public affairs issues are challenges to overcome.

The future success and strength of our agricultural base and rural communities depend on highly qualified, effective leaders. These leaders must begin the process of bringing people together to address key issues.

The economic vitality of agriculture and rural communities has reverberating effects throughout our entire society. Solving the problems and seizing new opportunities for Hawaii's agricultural industry and rural communities will significantly improve the quality of life of Hawaii’s residents and visitors.

The Agricultural Leadership Foundation of Hawaii

This Foundation was established to develop and support effective leaders in the agricultural industry and rural communities through a multi-disciplinary leadership training program. This program was designed to expand the participant's access to beneficial resources, build confidence, enhance leadership skills and broaden the participant's perspective of statewide agriculture and shared common problems.

The goal of the Foundation is to provide experiences to promote positive problem solving for individuals engaged in agricultural enterprises or rural community development who have demonstrated leadership qualities. In addition, the program provides facilitation training and the opportunity to expand their personal network within the agricultural and rural communities.

Hawaii is redefining the role of agriculture. This is an exciting opportunity and challenge. The members of Class IX commit to work individually and collaboratively with each other and with leaders throughout the state. We will:
  • Work with all sectors of the agricultural community to promote legislation and new opportunities for Hawaii and the Pacific.
  • Encourage environmental stewardship to preserve our natural resources.
  • Enhance Hawaii’s global agricultural relationships by promoting our unique Pacific Region location, optimum and diverse growing climates and technological market opportunities.
