Dean of the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR), University of Hawaii, is a Hawaii native, but he lived most of his life away from Hawaii until last year. Hashimoto was born on Maui, moved to the Big Island as a young child, and then to Oahu. He graduated from Punahou School in 1962. He left Hawaii in 1962 to attend Purdue University, where he earned a B.S. in civil engineering in 1966 and an M.S. in environmental engineering in 1967. He received a Ph.D. in agricultural engineering from Cornell in 1972. While at Cornell, he went to work for USDA's Agricultural Research Service in a program to assist egg producers to manage their animal waste. ARS sent Hashimoto to Hastings Clay Center, Nebraska, in 1976 to start its agricultural engineering program at the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center. His research focused on bioconversion of waste into natural gas. In 1986, Hashimoto left ARS to become head of the agricultural engineering department at Oregon State University in Corvallis. His major research area was the conversion of crop residue to ethanol. In 1995, he became OSU's vice provost for academic affairs. Hashimoto was named CTAHR dean in October 2000.
