Campus Sustainability Day

October 26, 2005

.

On this day, the University of Hawai’i Mānoa spotlighted its environmental, economic and cultural/social/political curricula, research, projects and organizations. Those on campus not involved in sustainability-related work (as well as those who are) became more aware of the depth and breadth of the vital, often visionary activities taking place here. Campus Sustainability Day was an Earth-Day-like learning fair, with educational displays, food and music. Basic elements of sustainability demonstrated in Courtyard include:

  • renewable energy sources such as solar and biomass
  • water-saving methods such as mulching, rainwater catchment and drip irrigation
  • landscaping using native and drought-resistant plants, and regional natural features such as rocks, mounds, ponds
  • permeable (porous) surface materials;
  • healthful, vegetarian, organic, locally grown, ethnically diverse food
  • tables, seating and decks made from durable, recycled materials
  • waste reduction and recycling
  • alternative transportation
  • diverse intellectual, cultural and artistic, and wellness activities.

During the midday program, Chancellor Konan addressed the group to acknowledge all of the wonderful efforts at UHM in support of sustainability.
