with the GovernorThree members of the Family and Community Education, Windward Oahu Council, Carol Mulford, Jacqueline Chong and Julia Duarte joined the Kokua Council in a state wide effort to create support for the NaTutu bill. The Na Tutu or Caregiver consent bill (SB946) allows a caregiver who lives with a minor, but is not the minor’s legal guardian, the ability to enroll that minor in school and extracurriculular activities. Rhoda Yoshino, faculty member in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences provided assistance and support for these efforts to improve the lives of grandparents caring for grandchildren in the Windward Oahu Council. The picture was taken (Carole Mulford (in the hat), Jacqueline Chong holding the bill and Julia Duarte in the middle back of the Governor) after signing of this legislation. These advocates for grandparents caring for grandchildren were instrumental in the passage of this bill.

a screen shot of the web siteA web-based application for calculating the success of home-based, family-owned businesses is now available. Developed by Diane Masuo, Grace Fong, and John Yanagida (FCS), edited by Dale Evans (PIO), and adapted for on-line use by Kathy Lu (PIO), the Business and Family Success Estimator is a tool for couples in which one person manages the business and the other manages the home. The estimator helps the couple evaluate both business and family and can be used to assess how changes in business activities may affect the quality of family life, or vice versa.
