20, 2005-Taro Forum to Discuss Genetic Research-
University
of Hawai'i officials and Native Hawaiian representatives meet at
a UH taro patch to discuss the future of controversial research
into genetically engineered taro. Research into genetically modified
taro — kalo in the Hawaiian language — has been conducted
in a laboratory setting for about three years. C.Y. Hu, associate
dean and associate director for research at the UH College of Tropical
Agriculture and Human Resources stated that UH has no plans to to
proceed with genetic research on local taro, but won't rule out

22, 2005- US Launches Probe into Sales of Unapproved Transgenic
Corn- Seed company, Syngenta, admits to sowing unapproved transgenic
Bt-corn. Though the unapproved variety differs only slightly from
the approved variety, and has subsequently been deemed safe for
human consumption and the environment, questions have been raised
as to if adequate controls are in place with regards to the production
