Public interest in food science and human
Nutrition has never been greater than it is today.
People want easy-to-prepare, good-tasting, and
healthful foods. They want to know what is in
the foods they eat, and how these components
may promote or harm their health. These are the
challenges for food scientists, human nutritionists,
and dietitians. The University of Hawai'i at
Manoa (UHM), because of its location at the
center of the Pacific Rim, offers a unique multi-
cultural perspective to meet these challenges
through undergraduate (B.S.) and graduate (M.S.)
programs in Food Science and Human Nutrition.
Depending on the course of study chosen,
Undergraduate students are prepared for careers in
the food industry, hospitals, public or private food
and fitness programs, and for teaching science in
secondary schools. Undergraduates are also
prepared for graduate or professional schools,
i.e. medical, pharmacy, public health, nutrition, or
dietetic instructional internship.
A Master of Science degree program is offered
with two specializations: Food Science or
Nutritional Sciences. Both offer thesis and non-thesis plans, and require a minimum of 30
credits beyond the B.S. degree. Graduate
students are prepared for professional careers in
foods and nutrition or further studies. Students
interested in graduate studies should visit website:
http://www.hawaii.edu/graduate/. A guide for
graduate students may be obtained at the
department office in Agricultural Sciences
Room 216 or on the website:http://www.hawaii.edu/graduatestudies/.
Undergraduate students may apply as
freshmen or as transfer students from UH
programs or other colleges and universities.
Transfer students are required to have:
-A cumulative GPA of 2.8 or greater,
-Completed FSHN 185 or equivalent
course with a grade of at least a B,
-And completed CHEM 161-161L or
equivalent course with a grade of at least a C
OR
Consent of the departmental Undergraduate Advising Coordinator
Students interested in transferring into FSHN must obtain approval from the Undergraduate Advising Coordinator Professor, Anne C. Shovic. Her office is located in the Agricultural Science Bldg. Room 314I. She can also be reached at 956-3847.
Each student will be assigned an advisor once they enter the program. To expedite your graduation we strongly recommend that students contact their advisor each semester prior to registration.
To graduate, all students must meet course requirements for the University (General Education), and Department (Core requirements plus one of the three departmental curricular program options: Dietetics, Human Nutrition, or Science Education). Second-degree students do not need to meet University requirements, on departmental requirements.
