Assistant/Associate Specialist (Veterinarian), position number 84640, UHM C of Trop Agr & Human Res, (Manoa), Human Nutrition, Food & Animal Sciences, tenure track, 11 month appointment, to begin approximately July 2008.

Duties: State-wide extension responsibilities include developing veterinary herd/flock health management programs for poultry, swine, dairy, beef and small ruminants, with emphasis on the prevention and control of animal diseases which have particular relevance to animal industries in Hawai`i. The individual is expected to coordinate and provide veterinary care and supervision for the college's animal research facilities and for animal research, instruction and extension projects, and to provide assistance with meeting compliance and accreditation requirements. The successful applicant will coordinate work with faculty, extension educators in the field, producer organizations, state livestock commodity specialists, the University Veterinarian, state and federal regulatory agencies, and field veterinarians. This person will be expected to teach undergraduate classes related to animal and veterinary science in line with departmental priorities; manage the Pre-Veterinary Medicine Student Advising Program housed in the department; advise undergraduate and graduate students; and perform other related duties. The candidate is also expected to obtain extramural funding for applied research/extension. The candidate will be expected to achieve Hawai`i State Veterinary Licensure within one year.

Minimum qualifications: For Assistant Specialist (S3): D.V.M from an accredited institution of recognized standing. Three years of experience in an appropriate veterinary related area at the next lower rank or its equivalent, including one year of experience directly related to domestic animals, preferably livestock. Demonstrated ability to teach college-level classes. Demonstrated effective oral and written communication. Demonstrated computer skills. Demonstrated ability to conduct veterinary extension and to interact effectively with clientele. Eligible for State Veterinary Licensure in Hawai`i. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS for Associate Specialist(S4): D.V.M from an accredited institution of recognized standing. Four years of experience in an appropriate veterinary related area at the next lower rank, with a demonstrated increasing professional maturity, including two years of experience directly related to the current position. Of the four years experience, at least one year must be working directly with domestic animals, preferably livestock.

Desirable qualifications: For S3 and S4: M.S. or Ph.D., Board Certification or Board Eligible in pathology, farm animal medicine, epidemiology, microbiology, or other areas pertinent to livestock production. Knowledge of epidemiology. Practical experience with a variety of livestock and/or livestock producers. Experience in conducting research. Knowledge of animal care and use regulations. Leadership experience. Ability to work with a variety of species such as companion animals, aquaculture species, and/or exotic wildlife.
