Welcome to the Department of Human Nutrition, Food & Animal Sciences. Our program offers programs in Human Nutrition, Science Education, and the only dietetics program offered within the State of Hawai`i.
Public interest in human nutrition and food science has never been greater than it is today. People want to know what is in the foods they eat, and how these components may promote or harm their health. Food manufacturers and retailers also want to know how they can best promote their foods while maintaining their best qualities. These are the challenges for nutritionists, dietitians, and food scientists. The University of Hawai`i at Manoa (UHM), because of it's location at the center of the Pacific rim, offers a unique multi-cultural perspective to meeting these challenges through undergraduate (B.S.) and graduate (M.S.) programs in Human Nutrition, Food & Animal Sciences.
The University of Hawai`i is an accredited land-grant university located on 300 acres in beautiful Manoa Valley, which is a few miles from downtown Honolulu and Waikiki beach. The campus provides a stimulating multi-cultural environment.
The Department of Human Nutrition, Food & Animal Sciences, located in the Agricultural Sciences building, is one of 6 departments with the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources, the first college established at the University of Hawai`i in 1907. Dr. Carey D. Miller came from the University of California at Berkeley to establish the Department of Human Nutrition and Food. She was instrumental in founding a strong science-based curriculum that now prepares about 100 students for graduation into the fields of human nutrition and food science.
