Educational Background

B.S. Chemistry, University of Saskatchewan
Ph.D. Animal Science, University of Guelph

Extension/Research Interests

Dr. Zaleski's area of extension and research interest is swine production management, including artificial insemination, livestock waste management, herd health and biosecurity, and swine welfare. Dr. Zaleski is a certified trainer for the National Pork Board's Pork Quality Assurance Plus Program.

Ongoing Extension Projects

Dr. Zaleski's major extension area is swine production and management. Areas of major concern to Hawai`i's swine producers and swine industry organizations have been identified in the Swine Industry Analysis. One extension focus is the use of production performance records, both for individual producers and to establish a current data base for the swine industry in Hawai`i and the American Pacific. The PigCHAMP program is used to provide record-keeping and analysis for swine producers. A survey of costs and returns has provided comparisons between small and large farms, O`ahu and outer islands, grain and garbage feeders, and finishers and feeder pig producers. Production and financial data from producers are used to develop performance parameters for reproductive, growth and economic efficiency in Hawai`i.

In order to improve the genetic base and increase genetic diversity, Dr. Zaleski is conducting an artificial insemination program for swine in Hawai`i and the American Pacific. Swine producers and technical personnel are trained to use either fresh or frozen semen from commercial AI suppliers to breed sows. Effects on conception rate, litter size, growth performance and carcass quality are monitored.

A third focus of the extension program is livestock waste management. Strategies for the recycling of valuable nutrients to improve soil structure and plant growth are being adapted to Hawai`i conditions. Training is provided for certification of swine producers under the Nationsl Pork Producers Council Environmental Assurance program.

Courses Taught
