Basal stem damage to koa can occur from either injury or disease.  Injury and rot can be caused by weed-whackers, grazing cattle, rocks piled against the stem, over-irrigation, and wood-rotting opportunistic fungi. Basal stem rot is a threat to koa because the damage can potentially cause stem girdling and plant death, or interior wood rot and tree collapse.
