Self girdling is one of the most common problems for nursery-grown koa seedlings in Hawaii. It is the result of plant being grown in pots where the roots circle around and around. Koa seedlings should be grown in tree pots or dibble tubes that prevent root swirling and encourage air pruning and hardening of root systems.
