The Germ City: Clean Hands, Healthy People

Washing hands
  • Hand washing is basic to food safety, personal health and disease prevention.
  • Most people--including children and adults do not wash their hands as often or as well as needed.

What People Have to Say About Germ City

Thank you for teaching me how to wash my hands so I don't get sick. I liked going into the tent, it was really fun!!! I liked the tent because I could see the germs I want to take off. When I touch my dog, I know now to wash my hands.
~2nd Grader Kula Elementary~

I learned if I do not wash well, I will not get all the germs off my hands.
~2nd Grader Kula Elementary~

I wash my hands with soap. I wash after I use the bathroom. I wash my hands after playing.

Germ City has made an impact here. There is a better response to requests to wash hands, better washing and kids wash their hands more. The student helper remembers to wash up after cleaning the bed in the health room.

The Germ City event was wonderful. We had almost 100 kids/adults come through the booth that evening. The day before the event, I presented it to my group, and assigned 5th grade girls to be assistants to help another [afterschool] group through the procedure. After they listened to me talking to the 3rd and 4th graders in the other group, they even started chiming in on "You might think you do a good job washing but wait till you see the areas a lot of people miss." I had 4 of these girls take turns for a shift helping in the booth. They practically fought over who was getting to help a longer time. We got LOTS of compliments from parents.
