The Germ City: Clean Hands, Healthy People

Washing hands
  • Clean hands save lives.
  • Hand washing is basic to food safety, personal health, and disease prevention.
  • Most people--including children and adults do not wash their hands as often or as well as needed.
Germ City: Clean Hands, Healthy People is an educational project to enhance awareness and improve the effectiveness of hand washing. This multi-state project is federally funded as part of the National Integrated Food Safety Initiative.

The project goals are:

  • Enhance awareness of the importance of hand washing
  • Improve effectiveness and frequency of hand washing among children, youth, adults, senior citizens, and at-risk groups rural and urban settings
  • Modify attitudes, enhance personal motivation, and facilitate behavior change
  • Evaluate effectiveness of the hand washing education program

Current partners include Washington State University, West Virginia University, University of Idaho and Alabama A & M University. Local collaborators include health professionals, school teachers and staff, local agencies and community organizations, and community volunteers.
