Park Ranger: Interpretation (GS-0025-05/05)

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:  As a uniformed employee of the National Park Service incumbent serves as a front-line representative working in the primary visitor contact station of Badlands National Park. Incumbent is responsible for daily visitor center operations, including conducting sales of Badlands Natural History Association (BNHA) items and providing visitors with accurate information on park resources and history, as well as safety and access information for Great Plains area. Incumbent is also responsible for presenting talks, walks, evening programs, using Power Point, and Junior Ranger Programs using prepared outlines on a scheduled basis to the visiting public. Incumbent works alone much of the time and must open and close the visitor center in accordance with posted hour and standard procedures. Incumbent operates an electronic cash register, computer, telephone, radio, and audiovisual equipment on a regular basis. Incumbent maintains records of sales and inventory and is accountable for BNHA funds and property

Physical Requirements:  Must be able to work in temperature and weather extremes ranging from extreme heat to heavy summer thunderstorms with accompanying hail.  Must be able to traverse rugged terrain up to four miles per schedule without assistance.  Must be able to stand for extended periods of time with only short breaks.

GS-05 requires one year of related specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 level; or, a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor’s degree with 24 semester hours of related course work.

Specialized experience is experience that has demonstrated the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform successfully the duties of the position to be filled. Experience may have been in technical, administrative, or scientific work, fish and wildlife management, recreation management, or other park-related work. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include, but are not limited to, the following: park guide or tour leader; archaeological or historical preservation research work; forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation, or conservation area; or management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations.

Related course work or education related to the occupation includes natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources.
