Park Ranger: Protection (GS-0025-07)

MAJOR DUTIES:

These positions serve as temporary Level II law enforcement commissioned park rangers at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.  Duties may include vehicle patrols of park roads and facilities, foot patrols of backcountry trails and woodlands, canoe/kayak patrols of rivers and lakes, powerboat operations on Lake Michigan, campground and fee compliance oversight, visitor orientation, interpretive tours, emergency medical care, search and rescue, wildland fire suppression, and structural fire prevention or pre-suppression.  May lead volunteers and other employees in accomplishment of resource and visitor protection activities.  Incumbent may be assigned to Homeland Security details at other locations throughout the country for short periods of time (2-3 weeks).  Incumbent may serve as a designated government credit card holder.  Operates motor vehicles in various traffic conditions.  May serve as a designated Class D Fee Collection Officer.  May be assigned to work at other locations throughout the Lakeshore as needed. Assignments may include work on the Manitou Islands or on the mainland.  You must be willing to work at any location within the Lakeshore and you may be reassigned to another location within the Lakeshore as funding, staffing, and weather dictate.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Applicants must meet the following qualification requirements, including the selective factor no later than the entry on duty date of the position being offered to be considered.  The entry on duty date for all positions is anticipated to be early-mid May. 

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: One year of specialized experience at the GS-5 level that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform successfully the duties of the position to be filled. Experience may have been technical, administrative, or scientific work, fish and wildlife management, recreation management, law enforcement, or other park-related work or work similar to that described under Major Duties. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include, but are not limited to, the following: park guide or tour leader; law enforcement or investigative work; archeological or historical preservation research work; forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation, or conservation area; management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations.OR

EDUCATION: One full academic year of graduate education related to the occupation OR superior academic achievement in achieving a bachelor's degree.  Education related to the occupation includes major courses of study in natural resources management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources.  Course work in fields other than those specified may be accepted if it clearly provides applicants with the background of knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance in the position to be filled.
