Recreation Specialist (GS-0188-07)

DUTIES:

Plans, develops, coordinates, and/or administers a variety of activities, events, and services associated with a recreation program, in order to enhance participants' morale and well being.

Provides advice and guidance to management and/or staff on a variety of recreation program conditions or problems, based on personal knowledge and judgment as well as on findings derived from review, evaluation, and interpretation of topics.

Evaluates plans, operating procedures, rules and regulations, or implementation of a recreation program to ensure that it effectively and efficiently provides services that address the needs and interests of intended audiences.

MINIMUM FEDERAL QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Qualifying experience for the GS-7 level includes one year of specialized experience at least equivalent to GS-5 which demonstrated the ability to apply the principles of one or more specialty areas of recreation. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include:

  1. Planning, organizing, coordinating, supervising, or evaluating community, industrial, outdoor, institutional, or other recreational programs.
  2. Planning, establishing, or evaluating a recreational curriculum for junior college or higher academic levels.
  3. Instructing in the principles and techniques of recreational program planning and management.
  4. Serving in a leadership role in the programs and activities of local, regional, and/or national recreational organizations.
SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE:

The experience requirement may be met by successful completion of one full academic year of graduate level education with major study in general recreation, or one of the appropriate fields of recreation such as outdoor recreation; recreation and parks leadership; wild land recreation management; natural resources recreation; youth recreation; public, urban, or community recreation; special populations recreation (e.g., senior citizens, institutional, etc.); or physical education; OR successfully meeting the requirements of the Superior Academic Achievement provisions.

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed education and experience may be used to meet the experience requirements.
