Soil Conservationist: Natural Resources Conservation Service (GS-0457-09) MAJOR DUTIES:

- Present alternatives to meet customer needs to assist in planning resource management systems for agricultural land.
- Advise landowners on feasibility of installing water management systems, Ag waste management systems, erosion control systems, and forestry and wildlife systems.
- Inform landowners of available technical or financial assistance programs.
- Perform follow-up reviews of established conservation plans and schedule to fully implement agricultural resource management systems.
- Prepare news stories and articles to reflect sound conservation planning and application systems.
- Present informational programs related to conservation planning and application. Assist in planning and implementing conservation projects to include assessments, plans and funding proposals.
- Assist in the collection of planning data for municipal and county government planning agencies.
- Participate in meetings held by conservation district commissioners and contributes to the technical discussion of soil and water problems and solutions.
A. Candidates must have a bachelor's degree (including 300 or 400 level courses)in soil conservation or a related agricultural or natural resources discipline such as agronomy, soil science, forestry, agricultural education or agricultural engineering. Course work must have included 30 semester hours in the natural resources or agricultural field, including at least 12 semester hours in a combination of soils and crops or plant science of which a minimum of 3 semester hours must be in soils and 3 Semester hours in crops or plant science.
B. Combination of education and experience--with at least 30 semester hours in one or more of the disciplines as shown in A above at the 300 and 400 level, including at least 12 semester hours in a combination of soils and crops or plant science, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Of the 12 semester hours, a minimum of 3 semester hours must have been in soils and 3 semester hours in crops or plant Science.

C. Specialized Experience: Candidates must have at least one year of Specialized Experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-07) in the federal service. This experience requires the knowledge of the principles and theories of soil and water conservation and related sciences in identifying problems in the soil and water conservation program. Examples include providing limited technical guidance and assistance such as soil interpretations, erosion control, and water quality recommendation to groups and individuals with planning responsibilities; communicating and sharing general information and explaining issues related to soil and water conservation issues, problems, and solutions to groups of rural and community landowners, residents, and agribusiness representatives and performing such duties as communicating soil and water conservation issues an problems to groups and individuals.
