News and Events

Dr. Ali Fares to become Affiliate Researcher with the WRRC

Dr. Ali Fares has been invited to become an affiliate researcher in the UH Manoa Water Resources Research Center (WRRC). In addition to a legacy of prominent water-related research, the WRRC will form the core of the new Institute for Sustainability at the University of Hawaii and lead one of the major focus areas of the institute – water. Fares’ appointment will create bridges between NREM and sustainability research being done throughout the campus. It will also open opportunities for Fares to expand his collaborative research, in such areas as the UHM special $1 million funding to address sustainability challenges, NSF programs in water and sustainability, Department of Defense initiatives in biofuels and base buildup in the islands, USDA funding and congressionally-earmarked funds for Hawaii. (Oct 2010)

Change in Undergraduate Chair

On September 9, 2010, Dr. Linda Cox assumed the position of NREM Undergraduate Chair. Linda served on the undergraduate committee for 4 years and will be assisted by current undergraduate committee members Dr. Greg Bruland and Dr. Tomoaki Miura.

Dr. Cox replaces Dr. Carol Ferguson, who has been the Undergraduate Adviser and Chair of the Undergraduate Committee since January 2008. Carol chaired the committee that designed the undergraduate degree program from 1997- 2000.  With the exception of one year, Carol has served as undergraduate committee chair or member since the program opened its door to new students in  August 2001. A big Mahalo to Carol for all the dedication she has shown to the program.

The undergraduate program has been one of the jewels of NREM, a program in which we take much pride. We received our first major in 2001-2 and we have steadily increased this to currently about 60 undergraduate majors. (Sept 2010)

Staff in the News

Comments by Paul Mayer USEPA, Dr. Christopher A. Lepczyk NREM and several other colleagues were recently published in the prestigious publication “Nature” in a piece entitled “Urban ecosystems research joins mainstream ecology.”

Lepczyk explains "That urban ecology and research on urban ecosystems has increased dramatically over the past decade, in response to a recent study that suggested urban ecosystems are understudied. Specifically, fifteen years ago there were virtually no studies in urban ecosystem compared to today, when there are hundreds of studies, long term urban ecosystem research sites, and a plethora of books and journals dedicated to the topic." (Sept 2010)

CTAHR Impact ReportCTAHR Impact Report
