September 03, 2007 Intern Opportunities with Bishop Museum's Offshore Islet Project Bishop Museum is seeking upper-level high school and undergraduate students as interns for their Offshore Islet Project. There are at least 54 islets that lie offshore of the main Hawaiian Islands. They act as preserves for species and ecosystems that have been lost or are disappearing from the main islands. Our project goals are to complete baseline inventories of seabirds, plants, and arthropods, identify threats to island ecosystems and contribute to the restoration and protection of these islets. Intern responsibilities include: Participate in biological surveys (birds, plants, insects) on offshore islets with possible opportunities for overnight, weekend trips. Assist with sorting, labeling, and databasing sample specimens collected from various offshore islets. Assist with research on ant-seabird interactions Assist with plant restoration Desired Experience/Qualifications: Interest in science. To access the islets we use a combination of wading, kayaking, and boating. Volunteers should be comfortable in the water. Time commitment is flexible, the more time you can invest, the more opportunities you will have to work on sensitive islands that are not open to the public.
