Chair's Welcome
Message
I
welcome you to the Home Page of the Department of Natural Resource
and Environmental Management (NREM). The mission
of NREM within CTAHR and the University of Hawaii is an important
one locally, nationally, and globally. This is because maintaining
a productive, stable resource base and a sustainable environment
is a challenge nearly everywhere, and especially in fragile tropical
areas. Ever-increasing population pressures often trigger the decreasing
availability of land wand water resources, shrinking biological diversity,
and accelerating environmental degradation. Fortunately, scientific
knowledge allows us to make rational decisions for the sound use
and protective management of valuable natural resources. Our instructional,
research and outreach programs emphasize the science and management
of natural resources and their links to environmental quality. Science-based
resource management is essential to balancing human needs with protection
of the environment. In addition, we have learned that effective
formulation and implementation of improved technology require multidisciplinary
expertise from physical, biological, and social sciences. NREM is
poised to meet these challenges because it is a truly multidisciplinary
department.
Hawaii is blessed by highly diverse natural and
human resources. Our programs offer wonderful opportunities for scientific
inquiry, learning, and outreach on the factors and processes that
must be understood and addressed for the benefit of all citizens.
