SOFT: Sustainable and Organic Farm Training
The
goals of the SOFT garden are:
- To create
an interactive learning environment for
University of Hawai'i students that highlights the role
of ecological processes in organic food production
- To promote
sustainability through
local food production and community health, and
- To provide
opportunities for students interested in organic
agriculture to develop skills in organization, writing, management,
and leadership.
Accomplishments
- The vegetable production area in Waimanalo has
been prepped and planted with the first crop. An interim staging
and storage area has been erected in Waimanalo.
- Dr. Andy Kaufman has developed a planting plan
for the Waimanalo Experiment Station location.
- Other planting locations have been established
(on campus fruit trees, organic garden at Mauka Campus).
- Two student interns, Jensen Uyeda and Brooke Moreno
have been hired for the summer to take responsibility for overall
maintenance of activities, scheduling of work days, coordinating
with Agribusiness Incubator Program to develop a business plan,
etc.
- Contacts have been established with Kokua Market
and Institute of Human Services, both of which are very interested
in receiving produce from the garden/farm. Kokua Market has already
been featuring Daikon from the student organic garden at Mauka
campus.
