Gardening Q&A
What is an Oahu Master Gardener?
The University of Hawaii Cooperative Extension sponsors the Master Gardener Program. Volunteers are trained to solve gardening problems and give research-based advice to the public through the Master Gardener Plant Helpline, plant diagnostic clinics, presentations on gardening to local groups, and maintaining demonstration gardens at the Urban Garden Center . Our volunteers are trained to help people learn to garden more productively.

Why become a Master Gardener Volunteer?

As a Master Gardener, you can help home gardeners on Oahu. Many home gardeners are inexperienced gardeners or inexperienced in gardening in the tropics. You will be able to help educate schoolchildren, teachers, seniors, and homeowners. Being a Master Gardener is fun, interesting, and rewarding.

Master Gardener certification
There is a $85 charge for training. In addition, potential master gardeners obligate themselves to 50 hours of payback time to this community-based program. The Master Gardener curriculum includes lectures in plant science and horticulture, pruning and plant propagation, soils and plant nutrition, insects, plant diseases, weeds, integrated pest management, pesticides, vegetables, fruits, lawns, ornamentals, and landscape design. Trainees earn the title “Certified Master Gardener” by completing their volunteer payback obligation to the program. Master Gardeners are encouraged to remain in the program after their first year to continue their education and participate in many fun gardening experiences.

How can you contact us?
